The Belief of Imagine Me is that all girls, regardless of race, socio-economic status, color or creed, have been specifically designed by God for a unique purpose. The Vision of Imagine Me is that every girl would see herself as God sees her and that the ministry will support the development of promising futures despite past failures, hurts and disappointments. The Passion of Imagine Me is camaraderie between girls and their peers, seeing them in healthy relationships equipped with the tools to make wise decisions throughout their entire lives.
About This Cause
Imagine Me is a dynamic mentoring and youth development organization offering one-on-one, group and peer mentoring, in-school, after-school and out-of-school time programming specifically geared toward serving middle and high school girls in Baltimore City. Imagine Me has served over 600 girls in Baltimore City and has matched over 85 girls with a one-on-one mentor. The inception of the first after-school mentoring program began in October 2007 at Calverton Elementary Middle School. Now with a foundation built on experience and residing at Calverton and Harlem Park Elementary Middle in West Baltimore, in addition to weekly programming through the Department of Juvenile Services at the Thomas J. Waxter Center for girls, Imagine Me has evolved into a dynamic and holistic organization that is building hope for girls via partnerships with schools, churches, community organizations and other non-profit organizations. In addition, Imagine Me has also previously served Baltimore Civitas and Maree G. Farring by offering monthly in-school group mentoring services to the female population of seventh and eighth grade girls. Program Components Mentoring One-on-One Imagine Me is designed specifically for the mentoring relationship to last at least three years with mentors following the girls as they progress from middle school to high school and beyond. One-on-one communication (i.e. phone, email or in-person) between mentor and mentee occurs on a weekly basis and in-person contact is to occur on no less than a monthly basis, some of which may include after-school and out-of-school group activities. Training for mentors and mentees is provided at the beginning of each program, prior to matches and continues every quarter. The mentors participate in support groups on a quarterly basis to strengthen and increase longevity of mentor-mentee relationships. Parents are involved from the beginning of the mentor – mentee relationship and invited to participate in specific components of the mentoring program. There is an annual recognition/awards ceremony for each program participant and her family. Group & Peer In the group and peer mentoring format, girls participate as a group on a regular basis (i.e. weekly, bi-weekly or monthly) with select female group mentors that facilitate group sessions and activities at select sites. Relationships and bonds are created through the consistent positive interactions in a group setting. The peer influence is enhanced in an environment that fosters positive camaraderie which proves to be contagious and impactful for the individual girl and the group as a whole. After-School Program The mentoring component is complemented by a holistic, multi-faceted after-school program that meets on Monday through Thursday afternoons in the Imagine Me room at designated program sites. Program elements include lessons, activities and out-of-school and weekend activities that focus on the “total” girl (touching social, academic, spiritual, physical, emotional, relational, behavioral and etc.) via partnerships with schools, churches, community organizations and other non-profit organizations. Educational Field Trips Program participants are encouraged to see the world beyond their community. To that end, trips to museums, colleges and universities, as well as, other cultural sites are planned to afford the girls a diverse perspective on the world in which they live. Workshops/Seminars & Symposiums Participants engage in interactive activities led by trained facilitators aimed at promoting academic achievement, career exposure, social development, a positive self-image and a healthy lifestyle. PROGRAMS At the inception of COVID-19 and the closing of school buildings, we immediately modified our programming to continue Imagine Me’s youth development programming in a virtual environment. The connectivity that takes place during our programming needs to continue to maintain our level of belongingness and connectivity, especially during this time of social distancing. All of our programming continues with multi-faceted activities that remain relevant to the areas that need to be addressed on a consistent basis specifically during this time, which includes addressing the social, emotional and mental health, family relations, healthy self-esteem, creative arts, critical thinking, journaling, financial literacy and fitness and nutrition. We implement these activities asynchronously (A) and then when we come together, we can discuss as a group as well as doing activities synchronously(S) on virtual meeting platforms. These activities include the aforementioned topic areas. 1. Middle School Programming Our middle school programming occurs at Baltimore City Public school sites two to four times a week for either after-school or in-school programming. Programming takes place in the “Imagine Me” room, a dedicated space designed to be a safe haven not resembling a classroom. The objective is for girls to feel comfortable to grow and learn and have the freedom to express themselves without fear of judgement or harm. It is within the Imagine Me room girls are heard, shown empathy, compassion and thereby transformed, even in a virtual environment. 2. High School Programming – The Imagine Me Leading Academy! In 2018, Imagine Me implemented the Imagine Me Leading Academy (IMLA) specifically tailored for high school preparation and youth leadership development to engage girls beginning in the 8th grade. IMLA consists of tutoring, high school success, leadership and college, and career exploration and preparatory workshops to increase the intentionality of ensuring academic and social success as girls enter the 9th grade and progress through high school and enter the college/career season of their lives. Programming is structured to be delivered through workshops, seminars, field trips, etc. on a weekly/bi-weekly/monthly basis depending upon the grade of the participant. The IMLA is administered in partnership and collaboration with Scholars Master Plan, Baltimore City Public Schools, TouchPoint Baltimore, Christian Liberty Church and other sought out partnerships, including other youth development organizations and area high schools. In addition, our workshops are also held at our administrative office located at Mondawmin Mall, as well as public libraries and other community-based organizations.
