Mission Statement
LCFA’s mission is the dramatic improvement in survivorship of lung cancer patients through the funding of transformative science, with the ultimate goal of curing the disease. To accomplish this, LCFA will work to raise both the funds and the national profile of lung cancer in order to substantially increase support of innovative and groundbreaking research efforts.
About This Cause
Lung Cancer Foundation of America (LCFA) was founded in 2007 by two lung cancer survivors and a lung cancer widow. Recognizing that lung cancer research is severely underfunded, LCFA was formed to raise both the funds needed for the very best in transformative lung cancer research and the awareness of the desperate need for this funding. Today, lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in the United States every year, yet it receives a fraction of the funding of other, less lethal cancers. The five year survival rate for lung cancer is a mere 17%, a stark comparison to other cancers with greater funding such as breast (89%), prostate (99%) and colorectal (65%). The good news is that research has been finding new and very successful tests and treatments using genetic biomarkers to create targeted therapies and even harnessing the body's own immune system to fight cancer. There is much to be done, but there is much hope. Continuing to fund significant research grants is the key to raising the survival rate for lung cancer patients everywhere and LCFA aims to be the leading philanthropic organization specifically focused on funding transformative lung cancer research.
