Mission Statement
The Goodie Two Shoes Foundation provides disadvantaged children and children in crisis with new shoes and socks, as well as other items deemed essential for good health and positive development. GTSF strives to reach 10,000 children annually.
About This Cause
Our unique distribution model is based on the premise that we don’t just provide a child in need with a new pair of shoes. Rather, we measure their feet on-site to ensure proper fit. We pair them one-on-one with a community volunteer whom takes a special interest and walks them through the process. We make them the center of attention, and, most importantly, we EMPOWER them with choice by giving them the opportunity to select any properly-fitting pair of shoes they want from our large stock of high-quality athletic shoes, just like the ones their friends at school might be wearing. The experience boosts confidence and self-esteem, and immediately eliminates one of the most visible signs of poverty. Each school year, GTSF identifies up to 25 schools in our District with significant populations of children in need of our resources. (Qualifying children must be on the Free- or Reduced-Lunch Program. Individual schools are only eligible for services once every 13 months). We then work with each selected campus to coordinate a one-day, on-site visit by our 48’ mobile shoe-store-on-wheels to outfit approximately 400 of their most-needy students with new shoes and socks. Since 2003, GTSF has outfitted over 155,000 Southern Nevada children in need with new shoes and socks; 20,000 children during our first nine years of initiatives and tens of thousands since. 100% percent of the clients we serve are considered to be low- and moderate-income. Children qualify for our programming by being in immediate crisis and referred by a school counselor, principal or social service agency, or being on the free- or reduced lunch program as a result of their families living at or below the Federal poverty level. Some of the children GTSF assists have NEVER had a new pair of shoes of their own! According to the Clark County School District (the nation’s 5th largest), the lack of adequate attire, most notably shoes and socks, significantly contributes to educational deficiency within the District. It is not uncommon for ill-fitting shoes to reduce classroom focus and participation. In addition, the outright lack of footwear is a contributing factor to not only missed physical education classes but also lower overall school attendance. In some instances, siblings actually share a single pair of shoes, which results in an alternating attendance pattern. Sound ridiculous? It’s not, and it happens right here in the Vegas Valley every single day. The effectiveness of our programming is measured simply by the number of children whom receive new shoes and socks. But in addition to serving an immediate need, we hope the children remember the positive experience and the feelings of empowerment that came with making an unrestrained, positive choice and draw on that experience when making decisions in the future. Long after the recipients outgrow or wear out their Goodie Two Shoes of choice, we hope they remember the empowering opportunity they experienced in selecting any pair of shoes of their choice from our extensive traveling inventory, their one-on-one interaction with a caring community volunteer and the feeling of absolutely knowing they are a part of a community that cares. Clark County is home to 380 schools, 11,000 registered homeless children and 224,613 children (75.8% of the Clark County School District) on the free or reduced lunch program, meaning that their families are living at or below the Federal poverty level. Our program provides as many Southern Nevada children in need as possible with properly fitting shoes and assists in eliminating this absurd roadblock to education. The Goodie Two Shoes Foundation and its programs are funded solely by Foundation, individual and corporate grants, sponsorships and donations. GTSF receives no state or Federal support for its programming. How YOU Can Help: We are currently seeking sponsors to lend support to our shoe distribution programming events, each of which provides 400 to 450 school-age children in need with new shoes and socks. All of our 25 annual distributions, allow children (some of whom have NEVER had a new pair of shoes) the opportunity to choose a brand new pair of shoes of their choice with the help of a caring community volunteer. In addition, each child receives a six-pack of socks, and often more. Each distribution event hosts 75 corporate-affiliated and/or individual community volunteers whom come together to work one-on-one with the participating children and ensure each child receives the individual attention they deserve.
