Mission Statement

KAMRA (Kirker African Medical Relief Association) works to aggregate small donations ($25 to $1000) to leverage large donations (hundreds of thousands of dollars) from foundations and individuals to send high-value shipments of medicines and medical equipment and supplies to Niger, the world’s poorest country, according to UNDP rankings.

About This Cause

WANT THE BIGGEST BANG FOR YOUR CHARITABLE BUCK? In 2021, the Kirker African Medical Relief Association (KAMRA) supported the shipment to Niger of two containers of MAP medicines and supplies, which arrived in April and August 2021, containing medicines valued at over $22,000,000. A donation to KAMRA of $100 generated donations from major donor organizations of $800 and directly supported the shipment of $213,000 in medicines. In November 2021, a new MAP shipment of medicines valued at over $7,000,000, including large amounts of antibiotics, which are prioritized by the Niger Ministry of Health, is being prepared for shipment to Niger. These shipments also included large amounts of re-hydration fluids and pre-natal vitamins, which are urgently needed by women to ensure the birth of healthy babies. KAMRA is seeking donations for this November2021 shipment and additional shipments in 2022. (According to the UNDP Human Development Index, Niger is ranked 189 out of the 189 countries ranked.) KAMRA was established in Columbia, SC in 2007 as a 501c3 non-profit and has supported sending over $220 million worth of medicines and medical equipment and supplies to Niger. KAMRA raises the funds necessary for clearance costs in Niamey and in-country transportation costs. The Fondation Kirker, a Nigerien non-profit founded in 2007 and headquartered in Niamey, shepherds the KAMRA shipment through Niger to final destinations. When KAMRA was founded in 2007, it focused on sending medicines and medical equipment and supplies to remote eastern Niger. The situation there became even more desperate in 2016, when refugees fleeing the murderous predations of Boko Haram in northern Nigeria poured over the border into Niger. Thus, over 200-250 thousand Nigerian refugees were added to the Nigerien population of 700,000. The local Nigerien population has welcomed the refugees with amazing generosity, but until the Boko Haram marauders can be defeated, there is no end in sight to this humanitarian crisis in eastern Niger. Boko Haram attacks on military posts and civilian villagers in northeastern Nigeria and eastern Niger continued in 2021. Currently, in six of the seven countries that border Niger, there has been violence and unrest, with large numbers of new refugees fleeing Mali, Burkina Faso, and northwest Nigeria into Niger. In northwest Niger, terrorists from Mali have repeatedly attacked Nigerien villages. Since 2016, KAMRA, in partnership with MAP International, has provided half of the medicines used in the four hospitals in eastern Niger, which provide medical services to the combined population of over 900,000. The MAP medicines are also distributed to many other hospitals in Niger with an urgent need for medicines. In October 2018, the Niger Minister of Health told a visiting delegation from the United States that medicines from the MAP shipments constituted 30% of all medicines in the Niger hospital system, a country of 24,000,000 people. KAMRA is looking now to further expand its assistance to hospitals throughout Niger, with the goal of providing continuous stocking of medicines for most of the hospitals in Niger. Your donation means so much – there is simply no other way to do so much good for so little money. Please go to our website, www.kirkerassociation.org, for more info.
