Mission Statement
United Way of Northern New Jersey is working towards racial and financial equity for ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) and households in poverty, those unable to make ends meet. Despite working hard, ALICE households struggle to afford life's basics.
About This Cause
At United Way of Northern New Jersey, we are dedicated to improving the lives of those who are struggling to afford the basics: ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) and households in poverty. For ALICE workers who are living paycheck to paycheck, inflation, a catastrophic weather event, or a medical crisis can lead to financial despair. We are investing in ALICE’s future in the workplace, at home, and across the community. We do this locally through our initiatives that fill gaps in services, community partnerships, public policy work, and volunteer efforts. Nationally, we provide groundbreaking research that is driving change for ALICE and households in poverty throughout the country. Because when we improve life for one, we improve life for all. United we are: Providing free tax preparation services each year to more than 5,000 ALICE households, saving each household hundreds in fees that can instead go towards necessities like food, rent, or gas. Expanding our groundbreaking United In Care program, which increases the availability of quality, affordable child care to reach more ALICE families in more communities. Collecting school supplies so children in ALICE families show up ready to learn, stocking food pantries to address skyrocketing levels of food insecurity, and distributing gifts to lesson the financial strain of the holiday season. Conducting research, analysis, and reporting that uncovers otherwise hidden critical insights, informs our work, and gives policymakers a roadmap to enact meaningful change, especially for Black and Hispanic households who are disproportionately affected. Partnering with employers through our ALICE@Work initiative to develop strategies that help improve life for their low-income workers and support those who are juggling work and caring for an ill, aging, or disabled loved one. With your help, United Way is working to change the course for ALICE and households in poverty. Go to www.UnitedWay.org/DawnAndErik to hear firsthand from someone we've helped.
