Mission Statement
When the Young Mens Christian Association of Eastern Union County began in 1900 our mission was to provide housing and activities for young men leaving their families and immigrating to Elizabeth, NJ at the turn of the century. At the time we could only rent out 12 rooms above Parson’s Drug Store for this purpose, but as our community grew and their needs expanded so did our Y’s programs & services. Today, the Young Men's Christian Association of Eastern Union County is known as The Gateway Family YMCA—a community-based organization rooted in Christian principles and committed to building healthy lives through programs that strengthen minds, bodies, and spirits for people of all ages, religions, and cultures.
About This Cause
The YMCA is a leading nonprofit organization committed to strengthening community. Working locally, the Y focuses on empowering youth development, improving health and well-being, and inspiring socially responsible actions. By bringing together people from different backgrounds, perspectives, and generations, the Y ensures that everyone has access to the resources needed to learn, grow and thrive. Our YMCA was incorporated in 1901 as the Young Men's Christian Association of Eastern Union County. Today we’re known as The Gateway Family YMCA—a 501(c)(3) organization, member of the National Council of the YMCA of the USA, and a certified United Way of Greater Union County agency. The Gateway Family YMCA is separately incorporated, locally controlled, and governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.
