Mission Statement
The New Jersey Institute for Disabilities is dedicated to the provision of comprehensive, superior, multi-faceted programs of service to individuals with intellectual, developmental and related disabilities regardless of race, gender, creed, economic status or age. To this end it shall: • offer programs to enrich the lives and enhance the development of infants, children and adults with intellectual, developmental and related disabilities to enable each individual to achieve full potential; • provide, as early as possible, evaluation, identification, diagnosis and treatment to infants, children and adults so that the number and severity of functional needs can be significantly reduced; • foster dignity, independence and purposefulness to all who enter into the programs of NJID; • maintain the community’s trust and confidence in the work of NJID; • to be a resource and a partner for life to consumers and their families.
About This Cause
Founded in hope, inspired by compassion and expanded by design, these distinctive characteristics well define the pathways taken by the New Jersey Institute for Disabilities (NJID). Todays exciting yet challenging times present many emerging developments associated with the care of children with disabilities. NJID programs and services include: The Children’s Center a comprehensive early intervention program for infants from birth to three years of age with delays and disabilities. Medical, educational and therapeutic programs are annually provided for more than 350 children and their families from Central New Jersey. Lakeview School- an approved private school for children with multiple disabilities ages 3-21. Fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Lakeview is a 72,000 sq ft facility with 19 academic classrooms. Lakeview provides assistive technology, pre-vocational and daily living skills, social services, enrichment activities and a community volunteer program. Leading –edge medical and therapeutic services with the most extensive clinical staff of any school in New Jersey makes Lakeview the program of choice for children with disabilities and medical needs. Lakeview serves 150 students.Communication is vital for personal independence and when supports are required the Augmentative Communication and Assistive Technology Center at the Lakeview School is ready to assist! Leading-edge communication devices are put to use at the Center to help students overcome challenges associated with speech and language deficits. Mobility supports personal independence and when help is needed, the Lakeview School is ready to assist! The Adaptive Seating and Equipment Center at Lakeview School offers state of the art evaluation technology and simulators to assure that the most appropriate mobility devices and seating systems are designed to meet the unique needs of each student for use at school, home and in the community. Established in 1982 as the first program of its kind in New Jersey, the Enabling Technology Center at the Lakeview School also provides assistance and guidance to parents in navigating third party payment systems such as medical insurances and government benefits. The Aquatic Center at the Lakeview School is the first of its kind in NJ. The technologically advanced HydroWorx 2000 pool provides the very best state of the art hydrotherapy services for students with disabilities. Alianza is an innovative and non-traditional approach to serving children with disabilities and their families in a one stop setting. Bi-lingual (Spanish/English) and culturally competent, Alianza provides resources which support academic achievement, self-esteem and healthy lifestyles. The choices for adults with disabilities mirror choices available to all individuals. Through person-centered service models, NJID affords everyone the dignity and respect which they so rightfully deserve. NJID's Adult Day Programs serve individuals with disabilities at five Adult Training Centers throughout New Jersey. Recognizing the individuality of every person, programs are tailored to exceed the expectations of the individuals and families who turn to NJID for services and supports. Adult Day Programs provide services for adults with disabilities in 5 adult training centers that offer meaningful activities for growth and personal achievement. While the services are individualized, the opportunities are limitless. Clients may be involved in Habilitation, Practical Arts or Life Skills Development. Clinical services ensure that health and wellness needs are addressed. Enhancements, which vary by location, bring innovation and enrichment to the program. Volunteer experiences for the clients are encouraged as pathways to full inclusion. Program participants are not spectators but community contributors, truly integrated and fully included. NJID-Access Art offers truly inclusive performing experiences for those interested in music and movement on stage. Also in this division is Bridges which is a federally funded community program supporting persons with disabilities residing in the Edison HUD Housing Authority apartments. Adult Community Support Services provides vocational training and supported employment service with job coaching and ongoing assistance to participants employed in private business and industry. Enrichment activities and recreational opportunities, along with case management encourage independence and self-direction. All NJID Adult Services are approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, (CARF International). Residential Services provide children and adults with alternatives for community living, including 19 group homes, and 15 supervised apartments. In NJID’s group homes, the person-centered design of each service extends beyond medical supervision and accommodations. Each person is encouraged to participate in home life from meal planning and preparation to leisure activities and the entertaining of friends. The NJID approach is one of respect and appreciation for the unique qualities of every person. NJID residential services provide participants with the greatest opportunities for full integration and participation in community life and foster dignity and personal choice in living arrangements. NJID's comprehensive programs help adults with disabilities achieve fulfillment and success within the fabric of their local communities where they live and work. So it is that NJID which had an abandoned garage as its first home 69 years ago has grown, transformed and revolutionized the delivery of specialized care for infants, children and adults with disabilities throughout New Jersey. To its stakeholders, a pledge is made to continue NJID's efficient stewardship of resources and steadfast leadership so as to advance the development of relevant solutions and supports for consumers.
