Mission Statement
The Animal Welfare Association is dedicated to eliminating animal suffering, promoting the importance of the human-animal bond, and improving the role of animals in the well-being of people.
About This Cause
The Animal Welfare Association, Incorporated (AWA) has been caring for animals and benefiting people in Camden and surrounding New Jersey counties since forming as a group of volunteers in 1948. In addition to our direct services of providing Animal Assisted Therapy and Humane Education to seniors and children, we assist low-income families by providing low-cost and free veterinary services for their beloved companion animals. Staff and volunteers provided Humane Education programs touching over 5,000 students and 150 Animal Assisted Therapy visits in 2013. Our Humane Education programs have significantly enriched the education of our region’s children. Schools and youth groups from within Camden County and surrounding counties take advantage of our free educational programs. Our Animal Assisted Therapy visits to nursing homes and assisted living facilities within Camden County are a valuable asset to the community. These visits are provided for residents at no cost to them or to the facility. Animal Assisted Therapy is widely regarded as an effective therapy for improving physical, emotional, cognitive, and social functioning. This year we added onsite Humane Education Summer Camps for children which greatly increased the number of children reached. During the 2014 calendar year our clinic performed 9,220 spay/neuter surgeries and hosted low-cost pet vaccination clinics helping another 7,600 pets of South Jersey residents. Disease control amongst the owned pet population is not just a critical component of pet health but of human health as well through the control of zoonotic diseases (disease which can affect both humans and animals such as rabies).
