Mission Statement
Empowering young adults with spinal cord injuries to reclaim their maximum level of independence.
About This Cause
Cheshire Home is now in our 40th year as New Jersey’s only special care facility for young adults with spinal cord injuries. Our 35 residents have quadriplegia or paraplegia. Our mission is to empower young adults with spinal cord injuries to reclaim their maximum level of independence. Throughout our history we have provided residents with a rehabilitative, peer-support environment based on the philosophy, ABLE, Not IDLE. What sets us apart from other facilities is the fact that we do not limit our rehabilitation programs to the physical and medical needs of our residents. Twenty-four hour nursing and personal care assistance, as well as physical therapy are certainly prioritized, but we don’t stop at that aspect of healing. We also focus on the additional programs and services that will offer tools for practical application, and enable our residents to become independent again. These programs include specialized training and education, utilizing assistive technology designed for people with paralysis, onsite employment opportunities, psychological counseling and social services, and transportation in vehicles specially equipped for power wheelchairs, so that residents can travel to college, job sites, and to community locales in order to conduct the daily business of their lives. As an extension of our services to the disabled community, we also operate two small community-based homes for adults with disabilities who can live semi-independently, Cheshire II in Parsippany, and Cheshire III in Florham Park.
