Mission Statement
The artists and Trustees of The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey bring dramatic masterpieces of the past to dynamic new life in order to inspire present lives as well as future visions of the world. We are a teaching theatre, fervently dedicated to providing transformative experiences through live performances of the classics. We integrate education and learning into all our endeavors, while promoting literacy, a culture of enlightenment, a dedication to excellence, and a keen awareness of how the arts are a necessity to the health of the collective mind and soul of a great civilization.
About This Cause
The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is one of the nation’s most senior, largest and most prestigious classical theatres, serving 100,000 children and adults annually. The longest running Shakespeare theatre on the East Coast, the company marks its 52nd season in 2014. Through our exemplary productions and groundbreaking education programs, we endeavor to illuminate the vital relevance and resonance of Shakespeare’s work and other classics for contemporary audiences. Our work features world-class performances as well as a range of arts education programming that is rare in its breadth, depth and quality. Each year we present six productions on our Main Stage, the F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre in Madison, and each summer we offer an additional long-run production at our Outdoor Stage, the Greek Theatre in neighboring Florham Park. The Shakespeare Theatre is as fiercely committed to the education and empowerment of young people as it is to producing classic theatre. The company is New Jersey’s pre-eminent provider of theatre education programs, offering a myriad of distinct opportunities that serve students, teachers, emerging artists and members of the general public, promoting literacy, community, collaboration, creativity and cultural advancement.
