Mission Statement
Our mission: The Adult Day Center of Somerset County, a compassionate community of acceptance, is a non-profit agency committed to providing extraordinary day care services for the elderly and disabled residents of Somerset County, and support for caregiving families. We strive to maintain the highest standards of care while nurturing the individual needs of our caregivers. We are committed to preserving dignity and independence of older and disabled adults and to supporting caregivers who are dedicated to keeping their loved ones at home.
About This Cause
Need for Adult Day Services: Adult Day Centers are an alternative to assisted living or nursing home placement. It costs an average of $25,000 per person annually for one individual to attend a day center compared to $48,000 per year at an assisted living facility or $110,000 per year for nursing home care. As a direct result of the services of ADC, older adults can live in the comfort of their own home with family and prolong or eliminate the need for institutionalization. Research has shown that it is important for older adults to remain in familiar surroundings to prevent cognitive deterioration. Through membership at the center, families share in the care of loved ones, but have daily respite. The benefits of adult day centers are threefold. A full-time caregiver gets a much-needed break while his or her loved one is at the center. He or she has time to rest, run errands or finish other tasks. A day center is helpful for a working caregiver as he or she tries to balance a job with caregiving duties. For many of our caregivers, the disease has caught them unprepared and they need to work. Especially given these uncertain times, it is critical that we help our families keep their jobs and avoid an economic pitfall. Finally for people with Alzheimer's and dementia, adult day centers provide a chance to be social and to participate in staffed activities such as music and exercise programs. ADC is the only Center in Somerset County that provides financial assistance to members that cannot afford the daily rate. ADC enrolls members that may not be deemed appropriate at the other facilities. We do not turn anyone away and try to work with the family to find a way to enroll even the most difficult cases. The Adult Day Center’s members come from 17 towns within Somerset County, and represent a varied demographic and socio-economic base. Approximately 13% of population of Somerset County is over 65 (total population is 324,893). Two percent or 6,000 of the residents are affected by Alzheimer’s or Dementia. The perce ntage of individuals over the age of 65 in 2020 is projected to increase to 16.3% and the number of adults over 65 year olds living with Alzheimer’s and dementia is expected to increase by 13% by 2025. Currently ADC serves approximately 160 members per year but this is projected to expand to 200-250 families per year as we grow the census. The Adult Day Center is open Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and offers stimulation and socialization in a loving and caring environment. When members arrive either driven by a loved one or on transportation provided by the county, they are greeted by the center’s dedicated staff and invited to enjoy breakfast or coffee in the dining room. Members convene at 10:00 for a morning meeting and exercise program. At 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. the members are given a choice of three activities such a bingo, pool, arts and crafts, cooking or bible study. Everyone eats lunch together in the dining room at 11:45 a.m. Members start to leave at 2:15 p.m. The Adult Day Center’s operating budget is just over $1 million annually. The organization holds the line on expenses and actively pursues and negotiates contacts to be able to provide its services to all who want to attend. We have contracts with the state and county to subsidize members with a medical diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or Dementia. If a family’s monthly income is deemed too high to be eligible for these funding streams, we offer a needs-based sliding scale for payment. The ADC’s fee is $61 per day. This fee is subsidized $12 per day per client by the organization as the board and staff feels it is important to keep our fees competitive and affordable. Only 20% of our members pay the full fee.
