Through awareness, information sharing, training, public policy initiatives, and a commitment to science-based intervention, Autism New Jersey serves as a collective and influential voice for the community and systematically and compassionately improves the lives of individuals with autism every day.
About This Cause
Our Mission Autism New Jersey is a nonprofit agency committed to ensuring safe and fulfilling lives for individuals with autism, their families, and the professionals who support them. Through awareness, credible information, education, and public policy initiatives, Autism New Jersey leads the way to lifelong individualized services provided with skill and compassion. We recognize the autism community's many contributions to society and work to enhance their resilience, abilities and quality of life. Autism New Jersey’s programs today center around four core service pillars: * Information – Provide referrals and service navigation assistance through our Helpline (800.4.AUTISM) and website (www.autismnj.org) for thousands of parents and professionals Our toll free Helpline -- 800.4.AUTISM – has more than 3,500 contacts per year. Our website, www.autismnj.org, has more than 60,000 unique visitors this year and 270,000 page views. Our skilled, compassionate staff specialists offer information regarding autism, evidence-based and alternative practices, and service navigation. Additionally, we offer referral lists of service providers, a variety of publications, highly individualized advocacy services and IEP Reviews ************************************************ * Education and Training - Share clinical expertise through regional trainings and statewide conferences We offer trainings in autism, evidence-based practices, and service navigation for parents as well as public and private professionals. Our Annual Conference held in Atlantic City will offer 60+ practical workshops and nearly 90 exhibitors covering the full age range and needs of people with autism. 1,000+ attendees attend annually. Our annual Spring Transition Conference focuses on the issues concerning young adults soon to be leaving school and entering the adult service system. Training and technical assistance is also provided to state agencies serving individuals with autism. ************************************************ *Public Policy - Serve as the collective voice for the community through public policy initiatives in collaboration with the Legislature and the state departments that serve the autism community Autism New Jersey has a long history of working with the Legislature, Governor’s Office and State Departments. Legislative highlights include passage of NJ’s Autism insurance mandate (15th State in Union) and First responders training. Legislators and their staff often turn to Autism New Jersey and recommend its services to their constituents throughout the state. Our current policy initiatives include: • Health Insurance – Increasing access to evidence-based services and reimbursement • State Recognition for Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) • Adult/Housing Issues ************************************************ * Awareness - Build community acceptance through our successful autism ambassador campaign and community outreach Our Autism Ambassador Program during National Autism Awareness Month (each April) provides kits full of ideas, templates, activities and resources. The campaign promotes awareness, sensitivity, and action in local communities. In 2014, 1,500 ambassadors enrolled (adults and children). An additional 300 “School Resource Packs” were distributed free to elementary classrooms throughout the state We regularly field Media Requests from outlets including: NBC, Bloomberg Radio, Star Ledger, NJ Biz magazine, and Asbury Park Press. ************************************************
