About This Cause
Founded in 1979, WBGO Jazz88.3FM is a not-for-profit, public radio station whose mission is to champion jazz – an original American art form. Beyond reaching 350,000 weekly listeners over the airwaves and on the internet, WBGO is a vital cultural resource that produces live broadcasts from prestigious jazz venues, provides award-winning news and public affairs programming, and presents children’s educational outreach programs. WBGO was the brainchild of an urban think tank whose members came together in Newark, New Jersey in the 1970s to affect change after the civil unrest of 1967. A group of city activists established Newark Public Radio, the first public radio station in New Jersey in 1979. WBGO later affiliated with National Public Radio (NPR) and went to a 24-hour broadcast day in 1980 Today, WBGO's listeners, including over 17,000 contributing members, tune in for jazz seven days a week, plus specialty programs on associated music art forms such as blues and R&B, as well as news and public affairs. WBGO has won the “Keeping the Blues Alive” Award and twice won the Gavin Report's “Jazz Station of the Year” Award. The New Jersey State Council on the Arts has named us a Major Impact Arts Organization for 22 consecutive years. The news department, recognized for its reporting excellence every year, provides reports throughout the day and weekly magazine programs, such as the WBGO Journal, Newark Today, and SportsJam. WBGO produces the groundbreaking new, nationally-syndicated program Jazz Night in America. Created in partnership with NPR Music and Jazz at Lincoln Center, Jazz Night combines a weekly radio broadcast, hosted by jazz legend Christian McBride, HD video, and live web streaming of performances from concerts and venues across the country. WBGO’s dedication to preserving the uniquely American art form of jazz for future generations has spawned a variety of children’s educational outreach programs including the Kids Jazz Concert Series, a series of ten free concerts each year for Newark and Essex County youth. WBGO’s broadcast signal can be heard in all five boroughs of New York City and 15 of 21 counties in New Jersey. Since 1996, WBGO has streamed its signal over the internet on wbgo.org and has become a true oasis to thousands of listeners from as far away as Malaysia, Turkey, Germany, Japan, Israel, and across America.
