MISSION: To stabilize families and individuals in crisis, especially the working poor, homeless and those in financial need and provide them with financial support and the skills training needed to live on their own. VISION A greater Essex County community where the well-being of children, families, and individuals are valued, nurtured and supported to maintain a quality of life through self-sufficiency.

About This Cause

Newark Emergency Services for Families, Inc. (NESF) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that has provided quality services for over 40 years to individuals and families in Essex County, New Jersey who need assistance with emergency food, clothing, shelter, utilities, rent, and other basic necessities during times of crisis. The homeless, the working poor, seniors, and those affected by fire, eviction, or domestic violence remain our primary focus. We welcome support from both the public and private sector to help us achieve our mission and vision, and continue the progress. Newark Emergency Services for Families, Inc. (NESF) provides services to all residents of Essex County with a particular emphasis on those residing in Newark. NESF objective is to enhance the quality of life of those who are economically disadvantage by providing specialized services, advocacy, and case management. NESF offers its clients direct financial assistance, case management, and other supportive services to prevent individuals and families from becoming homeless or the help those who are experiencing homelessness to be rapidly housed. In the wake of the COVID-19 Crisis, emergency services have become even more essential to our disenfranchised residents. Housing insecurities have become more prevalent because of the Coronavirus and the global pandemic that has consumed our Nation. Communities of color have been adversely affected and thus caused a dramatic increase in the demand for assistance. NESF will assist individuals and families in danger of becoming homeless by providing direct financial assistance (rental and utility assistance) and comprehensive case management. Case management services include creating a personalized housing plan to assist residents with making and obtaining set personal goals to improve their quality of life. Workshops on topics such as budgeting, resume writing and job interviewing are available. Additional assistance is tailored to individual situations and circumstances which may impact the client’s ability to maintain permanent housing. PROGRAMS & SERVICES Since 1977 NESF has provided support to individuals and families through programming in six areas; emergency services, workforce development, housing, ex-offender re-entry, health, and family development. With intensive and holistic case management and our referral network, we help resilient individuals and families who face multiple barriers achieve self-sufficiency through earning a livable wage and securing a stable place to live. • Emergency Services Our homeless Drop-In Center provides a safe and nurturing environment where homeless guests can take showers, receive light meals, wash clothes, use the telephone, and access our food and clothing pantry, as well as linkages to emergency shelters and other supportive services. Our agency has an on-site food and clothing pantry where Residents can receive weather appropriate clothing, food bags and food vouchers that helps to alleviate nutritional shortfalls in families that have “food insecurities”. Through our Rapid Re-Housing program eligible individuals and families experiencing homelessness and are living in transitional housing, emergency shelters, on the street or other places not fit for human habitation, can secure permanent housing. • Workforce Development The Supportive Assistance for Individuals and Families (SAIF) program offers a safety net for individuals who are receiving General Assistance benefits and nearing the end of their five-year lifetime term limit on welfare. Through intensive case management, life skills training, benefits counseling, referrals to job readiness programs, linkages to medical care and other counseling services, program participants are provided with essentials to gain self-sufficiency. This program is referral-based by the Essex County Division of Family Assistance and Benefits. Job readiness programs and Life skills are also provided to the community through a series of weekly workshops. We are also in partnership with Dress for Success to provide professional clothing for job interviews. • Housing Services Through our initial screening and assessment process, we provide supportive services to individuals and families experiencing financial hardships, such as; rental assistance, security deposits and utility assistance. NJ Share utility assistance program provides assistance with PSE&G bills for residents throughout the State of New Jersey. NESF also provides food vouchers for families and individuals who are facing financial hardship and cannot afford food. • Re-Entry Services We offer comprehensive re-entry services to the formally incarcerated. Our program includes long-term goal setting, intensive case management, linkages to in-house services and programs, job readiness programs, housing information, referrals to medical care and other counseling services as well as off-site referrals. We are devoted to helping those recently incarcerated to become successful, productive members of their community. We have Talk Tuesdays (Men’s Group) along with an Expungement program. • Health Services Additional Services in partnership with the NJ Commission for the Blind & visually impaired and New Eyes for the Needy, NESF offers free eye screenings and corrective lens vouchers to eligible Residents. In partnership with the Orange Affordable Care Act Navigator Project, NESF provides assistance with Affordable Healthcare applications by a certified program Navigator, during enrollment period, assistance is provided at our main location at 982 Broad Street, Newark. • Family Development NESF is home to the Weequahic Family Success Center (WFSC). The WFSC is a one-stop comprehensive resource center that promotes family unity and empowerment. Located in the heart of Newark’s South Ward, the center hosts monthly parent training workshops. Grandparent support group, as well as programs and activities geared toward strengthening the family. The work of the WFSC is driven and guided by a Parent Advisory Board comprised of community members, WFSC families and business professionals.
