About This Cause
HISTORY STKA was the dream of local families who had encountered Kidney Disease. Through the efforts of Roy and Peggy Faulkner, the dream became a reality. Patients receiving dialysis experience many hardships, including financial needs, transportation considerations and physical and emotional stresses. The Faulkners felt the need for an organization to support Kidney patients. On November 28, 1978, STKA held its first meeting and has continued to meet regularly since that time. At that time, the closest dialysis centers were located in Buffalo and Erie. The number of kidney patients who benefit from a local center reached 35-40. In order to assist these individuals, STKA actively supported the establishment of a chronic dialysis center at WCA Hospital in Jamestown, New York. This became a reality partly through their efforts in March of 1980. The dedicated members of this organization have surpassed many milestones. They continue to provide assistance to patients and their families with Kidney Disease. GOALS 1. Provide assistance, information, and support to Kidney Disease patients and their families. 2. Create an awareness of Kidney Disease, Dialysis and Transplantation for the general public as well as professionals. 3. Support other agencies efforts in promoting Kidney Disease awareness. 4. Promote organ donor and transplant donations by educating the public and professionals through the distribution of organ donor cards. Encourage active participation by local health agencies in the organ retrieval programs. 5. Create an increased awareness of resources and opportunities offered to patients and members on a national level through magazines, correspondence, and published material.
