Serve the homeless and housing insecure of Union County by ending their immediate crises through advocacy and services. Advocate for policy changes at all levels of government so that people have genuine access to safe and affordable housing. Build and maintain transitional and permanent housing to address this housing crisis. Enlarge the collective power in our communities to expand support for homeless and housing insecure people throughout our county and beyond.
About This Cause
Through our programming we are working to strengthen households and families experiencing homelessness or those who are at risk of becoming homeless. Project Gatekeeper is our emergency shelter program that provides a temporary place to stay for individuals and families who are immediately homeless giving them a hand up when they need it most. We also support working families with our transitional housing program, Hospitality House, to stabilize and regain independent housing and a place in the community. Our winter sheltering program, Operation Warm Heart, helps those who are literally homeless, often those who are street-bound, have a safe place to sleep, a warm meal, and the hospitality and friendship of the volunteers who support the program. Along with intensive case management the program's goal is to help those in the winter shelter develop a plan for permanent housing. Our children's program, Bernice's Place, offers a safe and encouraging place for children experiencing housing insecurity to go for after-school and summer day camp programming. Here, they receive one-to-one homework help and tutoring, participate in drama, reading, art, science, and scouting clubs and much more. The children make lasting friendships and can be kids just having fun. Community Education is another piece of empowering communities. We provide classes and workshops that help those in the community learn about parenting, budgeting, health and nutrition, public assistance programs, tenant rights and responsibilities, and more.
