Mission Statement
Our Ocean, and the creatures who call it home, need our active stewardship. The challenges facing our ocean life seem insurmountable. With public support, the non-profit Marine Mammal Stranding Center is making a difference. Since 1978 over 4,500 animals have come to our facility suffering from serious injuries such as shark bites, boat strikes, and fractures- to simple respiratory infections, parasites or malnutrition and dehydration.
About This Cause
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization formed in 1978 for the purpose of rescue, rehabilitation and release of sick and injured marine mammals and sea turtles. The MMSC is the only federally and state authorized animal hospital in the State of New Jersey that treats these animals 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week. Founded by Robert Schoelkopf, the MMSC carries on it's mission with a small staff of 9 full-time employees and over 350 volunteers throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Occasionally MMSC has assisted in other states that have no stranding team. In addition to animal rescue, the MMSC also conducts programs that are delivered to schools and interested civic organizations throughout NJ.
