Mission Statement
St. Joseph's Health is a healing ministry of the Catholic Church sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth. We are committed to provide exceptional quality care which sustains and improves both individual and community health, with a special concern for those who are poor, vulnerable and underserved.
About This Cause
St. Joseph’s was established in 1867 by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth as a modest 12-bed hospital in Paterson, NJ, with the mission to serve the poor and immigrant families who had flocked to the city’s industrial jobs and were in desperate need of care. More than 150 years later, St. Joseph’s remains dedicated to that mission. We are still the anchor institution (and only hospital) in Paterson, an economically distressed urban community and New Jersey’s third most populous city. One of the most unique factors distinguishing St. Joseph’s from many other healthcare systems is our demonstrated, long-standing commitment to serving the most vulnerable and historically underserved populations. St. Joseph’s Health serves all patients, regardless of insurance coverage or ability to pay. St. Joseph’s is consistently among the top providers of charity care in the state of New Jersey (charity care services exceeded $40M in 2019-20), and is a safety-net healthcare provider for tens of thousands in the region. Over the decades, St. Joseph’s has evolved in size and scope of service to become a vibrant and multifaceted healthcare organization, encompassing facilities across the region and attaining national recognition as an innovative clinical leader. With over 5,300 employees, St. Joseph’s is the largest employer in Passaic County. St. Joseph’s Health now totals more than 1,000 beds system-wide and comprises: St. Joseph's University Medical Center/Children's Hospital in Paterson (651-bed major trauma center/teaching hospital and State-designated specialized children's hospital); St. Joseph's Wayne Medical Center in Wayne (229-bed acute care community hospital); St. Joseph's Healthcare and Rehab Center in Cedar Grove (151-bed skilled nursing/long-term care facility); and dozens of outpatient facilities and affiliated physician practices. Each year St. Joseph's Health responds to over 1.7 million outpatient visits/procedures; 33,000 inpatient admissions; and 180,000 Emergency Department (ED) visits. (With more than 150,000 annual visits, the Paterson campus operates the busiest ED in New Jersey and is among the top five busiest in the United States). St. Joseph's Health Foundation is a dedicated 501(c)(3) organization with the mission to raise funds for St. Joseph's Health and its affiliated organizations.
