Mission Statement

The mission of the Black Women’s Health Alliance is to improve healthcare outcomes and eliminate and/or reduce health disparities experienced by women of African Ancestry, other women of color, and their families through advocacy, education, research and support activities, programs and services.

Value Based Principles Principle I: Diverse and Inclusive Principle II: Empowering and Self-Sustaining Approaches Principle III: Ethically and Morally Guided Principle IV: Excellence beyond Expectations Principle V: Responsive to Present and Emerging Needs Principle VI: Relentless Resolve to Realize the Elimination and/or Reduction of Health Disparities among Women of Color and their Families Principle VII: Harm reduction Programs Prime Time Sister Circle: PTSC is an evidence-based, socially innovative intervention designed to improve the lifestyle of African American women between the ages of 40-75 years old in the areas of stress management, nutrition and fitness. BWHA partners with Co-developers, Drs. Marilyn Gaston and Gayle Porter of the Gaston and Porter Health Improvement Center, Inc. to achieve these goals. Millennial Sister Circle: MSC is a wellness program that supports healthy lifestyles for women of color, ages 20-39. MSC educates, equips, and encourages participants to own their health in the areas of stress management, mental, physical and emotional health, maternal wellness, substance use, financial wellness and romantic relationships. Gambling Away the Golden Years: GAGY’s experienced facilitators conduct one-hour workshops about problem gambling targeting individuals 65 years of age and over. GAGY explores the possibility of gambling turning from entertainment to addiction, steps to gambling responsibly and reducing harm. Safe Dates Teen Dating Violence: Safe Dates is an interactive program focused on attitudes and behaviors associated with dating abuse and violence. The target audience is male and female teens between the ages of 12 and 19. Girls Circle: Girls Circle program demonstrates effectiveness in reducing delinquency for girls 12-19 years of age, now listed on SAMHSA's National Registry of Evidence-based Programs. The program aims to enhance girls' abilities to take full advantage of their talents, academic interests, career pursuits, and potential for healthy relationships. Supporting Our Families: Leadership Education and Achievement in Parenting (L.E.A.P.): LEAP is an educational skill-building workshops and activities that provide parents and caregivers with the necessary tools to become more effective, consistent, and active parents/caregivers. These workshops are designed to help parents increase their awareness of positive approaches to effective parenting to raise well-rounded, happy and successful children. Harm Reduction is braided into our existing program offerings to prevent and/ or reduce harm while promoting overall well-being. Support and resources are offered without judgment with a focus on keeping our community safe and healthy by meeting people where they are. This approach is especially important in communities of color, where we face unique challenges and systemic barriers.
