Mission Statement
The Daily Pennsylvanian is an independent student newspaper at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. Its dual mission is to serve the Penn community as a source of news and information and forum for discussion of campus issues, and to provide a meaningful learning experience for Penn students in all areas related to the creation of a daily newspaper and websites.
About This Cause
The Daily Pennsylvanian is completely independent of the University of Pennsylvania, and received no funding from the University. For decades since the paper incorporated in 1984, advertising sales provided all the funding needed to maintain the operation. Following the recession which began in 2007, the entire media world experienced a change in consumer media consumption -- smartphones, tablets, Twitter and Facebook changed the way people found and consumed news and information -- and the long-established advertising-led business model suffered a significant contraction. While advertising continues to fund the majority of the organization's operations, the change in the level of income has forced the paper to curtail spending and to seek additional sources of revenue in order to continue its mission to serve the Penn community and to provide a great learning experience for Penn students. Charitable giving, from alumni of the DP, from Penn alumni at large, and from others who value the role of an independent, free press is one of the new pillars of funding which can sustain this 130 year-old organization as it navigates the changing media landscape.
