About This Cause

About AJWS American Jewish World Service (AJWS) is the leading Jewish organization working to promote human rights and end poverty in the developing world. Inspired by the Jewish commitment to justice, AJWS advances the health and rights of women, girls and LGBT people; promotes civil and political rights; defends access to food, land and water; and aids communities in the aftermath of disasters. AJWS pursues lasting change by supporting grassroots and global human rights organizations in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean and by mobilizing supporters in the U.S. to advocate for global justice. Working together, the AJWS community strives to build a more just and equitable world. Our Impact Goals AJWS’s international grantmaking and U.S. advocacy focus on four central issues that we believe are key to securing human rights and ending poverty in the developing world: Advancing the Health and Rights of Women, Girls and LGBT people We support women, girls and LGBT people so that they can stop violence and discrimination, gain control over their lives and bodies, and live in health, safety and dignity. Promoting Civil and Political Rights We aid communities in their work to recover from conflict, fight oppression, speak out against injustice and create vibrant, peaceful societies that respect the rights of all citizens. Defending Access to Food, Land and Water We empower communities to protest exploitative development conducted without their consent and protect the land, water and natural resources that they depend on for survival. Aiding Communities in the Aftermath of Disasters When severe disasters strike in the countries where we work, AJWS provides immediate humanitarian relief and stays the course with long-term support for recovery—building more just and equitable societies from the ground up. To effect change around these four issues, AJWS supports human rights organizations working in 19 countries and mobilizes the American Jewish community and its allies to engage in campaigns, lobby Congress and advocate for laws and policies that promote human rights in the developing world. Together, our grantees and supporters are fighting poverty and oppression, changing unjust laws and policies, and building strong social justice movements worldwide. Our Impact Over the past 30 years, AJWS’s grantees have changed the lives of millions of people and communities. Since our founding we have granted $230 million to thousands of social change organizations worldwide that have stood up for justice and sought to address some of the world’s most profound human rights challenges. These organizations have saved lives in the aftermath of disasters and atrocities, including the Darfur genocide, the Southeast Asian tsunami and the Haiti earthquake. They have helped halt health epidemics, including HIV and Ebola. They have brought about shifts in their societies, reducing prejudice, discrimination and violence in their communities. Many have achieved legislative victories, such as the passage of anti-rape laws in India or the overturn of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act. And all of our grantees have helped strengthen the human rights movements in their countries by mobilizing and training local people to speak out and overcome the challenges they face. Here in the United States AJWS, our supporters and our allies have contributed to key advances in supporting many of these same struggles: pursuing peace in Sudan, relieving the debts of developing nations, increasing U.S. funding and accountability for earthquake relief in Haiti, and reforming U.S. food aid policy so that more money helps farmers in the developing world. Currently, AJWS’s We Believe campaign strives to end violence against women and girls, stop hate crimes against LGBT people, and empower girls to end child marriage worldwide.
