Mission Statement

The Mission of the Cornerstone is to keep people safe, fed, housed and clothed.

About This Cause

We provide help to the community with a Community Soup kitchen serving meals every day including twice on weekdays and once on weekends. In addition to meals, diners get access to local agencies offering employment, benefit and medical supports during hours that meals are not served. The Kitchen Manager also coordinates a mobile food pantry in collaboration with CTFoodshare. The mobile pantry comes twice a month. Cornerstone operates two family triage shelters for families who have been verified as being unhoused. The Lodge is a congregate shelter holding approximately 20 people. The New Hope House has individual family rooms and can house up to 25 people. During the winter months we offer winter warming for 10-15 additional people. Residents work with our Case Managers to get short term help with obtaining documents, applying for benefits, and looking for housing. The main purpose of the Triage model is a short term placement with residents moving to either long term shelter or alternative housing. Cornerstone has a Food Cupboard that distributes food to TEFAP eligible families once a week. Food includes meats, produce, non-perishable items, baked goods, dairy and other assorted items as available. clothing bank, diaper bank and drop in help center. In conjunction with the Community Kitchen, we collaborate with the Vernon Housing Authority (VHA) to offer food shopping onsite at rotating VHA facilities every Friday. The Clothing Bank, Etc. offers clothing, household items and specialty items to shoppers on a monthly basis. The Clothing bank also offers four seasonal special distributions: The Prom Boutique in the spring, Back to school in August, Halloween Bootique in October and the Christmas Holiday Shoppe in December. We offer diapers to local residents who have children under the age of four on a monthly basis at our Diaper Bank. Cornerstone has provided food, clothing and shelter to low income families and single adults for over 40 years with the help of mostly all volunteers. All services are provided free of charge.
