About This Cause
Located in the city of Hartford, NAMI Connecticut began as a statewide "family organization" more than 30 years ago. Its mission is to improve the quality of life for all those impacted by mental illness through no-cost support, education and advocacy. NAMI Connecticut is the only organization in the state that offers direct education and support opportunities concerning mental health conditions to individuals and families, while continuously focusing on effective systems change. Collaboration is a hallmark of NAMI Connecticut’s work and successes. It partners and collaborates with numerous state agencies, local and regional stakeholders, advocates, and individuals to accomplish its goals. These partners include the Regional Mental Health Boards, the Office of the Child Advocate and Healthcare Advocate, the Keep the Promise Coalition – a statewide organization of stakeholders targeting mental health issues and policy - the state’s Multicultural Health Partnership (program of the Dept. of Public Health), the Hartford public school system, the Child Health and Development Institute (CHDI), and the UConn School of Social Work and Medicine, among many others. Our social change philosophy is rooted in the lived experience, the premise that individuals with mental health conditions and their families are the “experts,” that evidence-based and promising practices are the ideal, that personal stories carry significant weight when appealing to legislators, and that support and ongoing education are needed to maximize the effect of systems change. Through its education, support and advocacy activities NAMI Connecticut currently serves more than 9,000 individuals annually – this includes family members impacted by mental health conditions of a son, daughter, spouse, or other relative, and individuals, both children and adults who are living with mental health conditions. NAMI Connecticut is additionally active on social media with more than 1,000 Twitter followers, close to that number of people on Facebook and more than 20,000 unique visitors to our website each year where people come to find information and resources related to mental health.
