Mission Statement
The Food Bank of South Jersey exists to provide an immediate solution to the urgent problem of hunger by providing food to needy people, teaching them to eat nutritiously, and helping them to find sustainable ways to improve their lives.
About This Cause
We like to say we are not just the Food Bank of South Jersey…we are the Food Bank FOR South Jersey. We are the largest provider of emergency food assistance in Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, and Salem counties. We’ve been serving our neighbors in South Jersey since 1985. Of the people we serve, 33% are children under age 18, 54% are adults aged 18 to 64 and the remaining 13% are seniors over 65. In 2022, FBSJ was able to distribute over 18.5 million pounds of food, including 2.7 million pounds of fresh produce. The three pillars of our work are: -Alleviating hunger by providing healthy food to those in need -Providing information and education on how to eat nutritiously -Helping people find sustainable ways to improve their lives The first pillar of our mission is to provide food to those in need. Every day our warehouse is bustling with activity of food coming in and going out. Our second pillar focuses on nutrition by providing a number of health and wellness programs that educate children, teens and adults on healthy eating. These programs help people maximize the impact of the food they receive and help reduce food waste. And the third pillar of sustainability is harder to define but it is how we assess, plan and implement strategies to help make the lives better of the people we serve. The pandemic taught us issues like health care access, unemployment, affordable housing, and food insecurity are all interconnected. We approach sustainability in many ways by bringing people together in the community and connecting people to additional services.
