About This Cause

This past year the Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health was the first ever Surgeon General’s Report on this important topic. This Report aimed to shift the way our society views substance abuse and the stigma attached. The following is a direct quote from the Surgeon General, “This unfortunate stigma has created an added burden of shame that has made people with substance use disorders less likely to come forward and seek help. It has also made it more challenging to marshal the necessary investments in prevention and treatment. We must help everyone see that addiction is not a character flaw – it is a chronic illness that we must approach with the same skill and compassion with which we approach heart disease, diabetes and cancer.” This health crisis impacts 1 in 3 households and touches all economic and ethnic demographics. According to the Center for Disease Control, heroin-related overdose deaths have more than quadrupled since 2010. From 2014-2015 heroin overdose death rates increased by 20.6% with nearly 13,000 people dying in 2015. An analysis by NJ Advance Media brings these statistics closer to home stating that the heroin overdose death rate in New Jersey is more than triple the rate released by the CDC. This surpasses homicide, suicide, car accidents and AIDS as a cause of death in our State. The 2015 report from the NJ Substance Abuse Monitoring System shows that 68,571 New Jersey residents sought treatment for their addiction; 3,800 more residents than reported in 2014. Please note that these numbers are ONLY those who sought out treatment. Thirty-two years ago the typical Freedom House client was over forty with alcohol as their drug of choice. Today the clients are much younger (18 to 30) who have turned to heroin as a cheaper and more accessible option to prescription painkillers. This disease is taking the precious lives of our loved ones, our neighbors, our co-workers – no one is immune. In our thirty-two years of existence, Freedom House has saved many lives and positively impacted many families. Below is a quick look outlining Freedom House’s program history over the last 32 years:  Founded in 1985 by Terry Herriott and a group of concerned community members  August 12, 1986 first resident admitted to Glen Gardner’s 6 bed facility – halfway house program  1995 Morris County leases Morristown property to Freedom House as a men’s transitional house, Brian’s House  1999 Freedom House was the first halfway house in the State of New Jersey to receive accreditation  2000 The Family Afterward, women’s program officially opened  2005 First halfway house to have Drug Court services accredited  2006 Freedom House is licensed by the State of New Jersey  2009 second men’s transitional house, Grantham House, opened - named for the 1969 Jets Linebacker Larry Grantham  2014 Outpatient program opens  2017 Second Outpatient location opens Freedom House continues to evolve and expand services to meet the ever growing needs. The addition of outpatient services has been a key element to serving those who need after care once they leave a residential treatment program as well as for those who are seeking treatment while maintaining their daily living schedules. Our continuum of care, full spectrum of addiction services and longevity in the communities we serve reinforce our commitment to “saving lives and reuniting families”. Programs: Freedom House of New Jersey provides three major programs for those suffering from substance use and co-occurring disorders: - Long-term residential treatment in a halfway house setting to adult males; post program transitional housing is also available with facilities located in Morris and Hunterdon counties; - The Family Afterward residential (facility located in Mercer County) and case management program serving women who are recovering from alcoholism and/or drug addiction and who are seeking reunification with their children; - Outpatient Services – focus on the treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders; Facilities located in Hunterdon County and opening mid 2017 in Warren County. - Freedom House does not discriminate as to economic status, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, military status, disability, or language.
