About This Cause

North Jersey Elks Developmental Disabilities Agency In 1947 a group of parents of children with disabilities worked along with members of three local Elks Lodges to establish the Passaic County Elks Cerebral Palsy Center on Main Avenue in Clifton, New Jersey. The Center’s name changed to the North Jersey Elks Developmental Disabilities Agency in 2014. Many Elks members volunteered and formed the Board of Trustees to operate the programs and the Special Children’s Committee to organize the fundraising. Through their tireless fundraising efforts, the rehabilitation center grew in the number of children served and the number of therapeutic services provided. In 1965 special education began at the agency staffed with teachers from the Clifton Board of Education. In 1978 the Board of Trustees decided to hire its entire staff and a private, non-profit school for children with disabilities was founded and licensed by The New Jersey Department of Education. Two facility additions were added to the school in 1980 and 1983 to accommodate the growing school populations and their diverse educational, therapeutic, and medical needs. In 1984 an Adult Training and Medical Day Care Program was started for graduates of the agency and other special needs schools. This program offers medical, therapeutic, and social services along with vocational training and recreation. This facility is located at 600 Route 46 West in Clifton and serves 52 adults from surrounding communities. Due to continued growth in the school population, the agency established a High School at 15 Union Avenue in Clifton in 1993. This 20,000 square foot facility provides ten classrooms for 100 students along with treatment rooms for occupational, physical and speech therapy. The high school students, like the elementary school children, participate in instruction under the New Jersey State Core Curriculum Standards. Students also receive job coaching in the community and computer training to meet their individual needs. Our three facilities have expanded under the leadership of the Board of Trustees. The Board is comprised of dedicated volunteer representatives from five Elks Lodges: Paterson/Elmwood Park #60, Passaic Valley #2111, Pompton Lakes #1895, Wayne #2181, and Clifton #1596, as well as a team of professional eminent citizens. Over the last seventy years the agency has grown from a small out-patient rehabilitation center to a large organization with three facility serving over 260 students and adults from fifty different Northern New Jersey municipalities.
