WEST PHILADELPHIA CULTURAL ALLIANCE

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania, 19139-4228 United States

Mission Statement

The West Philadelphia Cultural Alliance owns and operates the Paul Robeson House and Museum. The alliance was established in 1984 to “stimulate community participation in the arts by cultivating an interest in, understanding of, and appreciation for the arts in the greater Philadelphia region.” It grew out of a City of Philadelphia initiative to assess the cultural needs of neighborhoods, Frances P. Aulston, the Robeson House’s longtime director and tireless champion, said in a 2015 interview.

About This Cause

The West Philadelphia Cultural Alliance (WPCA) serves as the local arts council and a community advocate for its artists. As a project of the West Philadelphia Cultural Alliance (WPCA), The Paul Robeson House & Museum expands WPCA’s mission by (1) promoting increased tolerance among multicultural residents of the community; (2) supporting the development and marketing of local artists; and (3) serving as an advocate for the power of the arts to promote social change and economic development. The Paul Robeson House & Museum (PRHM), since 1994, has hosted an international audience to reflect on the remarkable global legacy of Paul Robeson, the trailblazing Black entertainer who exemplified the power of the arts as a tool for social change. Between the New Negro Renaissance into the heyday of Civil Rights struggle, Robeson persevered through intense government surveillance, blacklisting, and character persecution to persistently advocate on behalf of worldwide movements for freedom and justice through his speeches, song, and writings. At the PRHM, we contextualize these achievements within a family legacy, incorporating histories of Eslanda Goode Robeson, Cyrus Bustill, Gertrude Bustill Mossell, Nathan Mossell, and Sadie Tanner Alexander as crucial to understanding why Paul chose to live such a bold life. We annually host national and international tourists, in addition to local school, faith, and cultural groups. We are a performance venue, resource hub, and gathering space for local cultural workers. We serve as an anchor for various neighborhood revitalization projects, hosting college courses, youth groups, and senior info-sessions alike. We embrace our advocacy mission by hosting groups for teach-ins surrounding issues like housing access, Black women’s health, and public education.
