Mission Statement
The Haitian Project through its support of Louverture Cleary Schools, a national network of tuition-free, Catholic, co-educational secondary boarding schools in Haiti, provides for the education of academically talented and motivated students from Haitian families who cannot afford the cost of their children’s education in order to maximize their potential and enable them to work toward building a Haiti where justice and peace thrive.
About This Cause
The Haitian Project, Inc. (THP) supports and oversees Louverture Cleary School (LCS), a tuition-free, Catholic, co-educational secondary boarding school for academically gifted students from Haitian families who cannot afford the cost of their children’s education. Through LCS, The Haitian Project educates and nurtures bright young students who would otherwise have no access to a secondary education in order to maximize their potential and enable them to work towards building a Haiti where peace and justice thrive. LCS boasts a historic pass-rate of 99% (twice the national rate) on Haiti's national exam which students must pass to be eligible for university. Outside the classroom, LCS students dedicate their time to serving and empowering others in the school’s neighborhood and the Port-au-Prince area. From Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, our 360 students receive shelter, food and education, enabling them to provide hours of service activities to the community each day. There are currently over 800 LCS alumni working to make Haiti’s better tomorrow a reality. 90% are either attending university or employed in professional careers in Haiti as doctors, teachers, entrepreneurs and accountants, to name just a few. Having come from families struggling to get by on less than $1,000 per year, LCS alumni earn on average $12,000 annually just a few years out of university. The Haitian Project's university scholarship program supports 120 LCS alumni at Haitian universities each year, making it one of the largest programs of its kind in Haiti. Now, after over 30 years of success with its flagship school in Port-au-Prince, The Haitian Project has embarked on a plan to build a national network of ten schools across Haiti. Construction of the second school and "Model Campus" for the LCS Network is currently underway in the Diocese of Gonaives.
