About This Cause
South Shore Habitat for Humanity (SSHH) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to delivering simple, healthy, affordable homes in partnership with families in need. Since our founding in 1986, SSHH has completed 61 homes in 21 communities, helping 102 adults and 200 children. South Shore Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to help individuals build and purchase a home of their own providing our family partners with hope, a sense of pride and the foundation to achieve a better life for themselves and their children. We are the only developer of affordable housing that is able to provide a 20-30 year affordable mortgage, as well as the ability to keep the housing inventory affordable in perpetuity. SSHH does business in accordance with Federal and Massachusetts Fair Lending Laws. Our home building program promotes neighborhood stabilization and community reinvestment and empowers individuals and families to become vital contributors to their community through homeownership and volunteerism. At South Shore Habitat we believe in aiding our local families as they try to improve their lives by achieving one of life’s most basic necessities; decent shelter. Providing our family partners with a solid foundation, they are able to reach their full potential and thrive. Additionally, our partner children live healthier, safer lives, and perform better in school. Ultimately, we are strengthening the fabric of our community, and thereby helping build a better future for us all. South Shore Habitat for Humanity’s program relies on individual volunteers from all walks of life to build our homes. While we do use specialized contractors for certain aspects of construction, volunteers do 90% of our building. Beyond building our homes, volunteers serve as stewards for our mission. Our philosophy is to provide a hand-up, not a hand-out. We believe in the community coming together – Neighbors helping Neighbors – to end the cycle of poverty housing and to change the lives of those we serve.
