Mission Statement
Provide an Eruv for the Boston Jewish community.
About This Cause
The Greater Boston Eruv Corporation was incorporated in 1984 as a non-profit entity with the aim of providing a functioning Eruv for the Boston, Brookline, and Newton Orthodox Jewish community. Originally an 18-mile perimeter around portions of all three municipalities and first brought into operation in January 1993, today's Boston Eruv has been expanded to a 26-mile perimeter including most of Boston University along with other neighborhoods of Brookline and Newton. The presence of the Eruv enables residents and visitors to carry permissible objects on the Sabbath from home to outdoors and back. Young families can attend Synagogue services together while pushing a stroller to get to services. Individuals with disabilities can use wheelchairs and other assisting devices and thus the Eruv allows for more equal access to all to both Jewish institutions and public spaces on the Sabbath.
