Mission Statement
Wildlife Information Center, Inc. (d.b.a. Lehigh Gap Nature Center) is an environmental education and conservation organization based on a a rehabilitated Superfund site in eastern Pennsylvania.
About This Cause
The Lehigh Gap Nature Center (Wildlife Information Center, Inc.) is a non-profit, member supported, environmental education and conservation organization with our office in Washington Township, Lehigh County. Our education programs, conservation initiatives, research projects, and trail system allow us to achieve our strategic plan goal of educating students of all ages about the environment and nature through the lens of our grassroots conservation work at Lehigh Gap, and encouraging and supporting outdoor recreation and ecological research. We receive no ongoing support from any government entity. We are funded by member dues and donations, competitive grants, and business donations. We have now been operating very successfully for more than a decade. In our current society, there are many threats to the environment. We see those threats as opportunities for action rather than causes for despair. Our environmental education programs stress the connections between human health and well being, the economy, and the environment. None of these stands alone and we believe it is important for young people to realize that we all need clean air and water and health soil to survive, so taking care of the environment means taking care of ourselves. One of the major deficiencies in the conservation movement today is a lack of diversity in conservation professionals and amateurs. At Lehigh Gap Nature Center we have been addressing that need for the past few years with innovative programs that build capacity for environmental education and enjoyment in the communities of color of the surrounding region. In doing this, we not only help to diversify conservation, but also improve the quality of life for those involved in our programs.
