About This Cause

New Reach (NR) has been a state leader working to end homelessness for 30+ years in South-Central Connecticut. The mission of New Reach (NR) is to inspire lasting independence for all people affected by homelessness and poverty through a continuum of housing and support using the most innovative, progressive, equitable, and inclusive methods. Established in 1990, our goal is to end homelessness, which means making homelessness rare, brief, and one-time. Our integrative services accomplish this by preventing eviction and homelessness (rare); providing crisis services (brief); and offering multiple housing options (one-time). With about 85 employees and the support from over 350 volunteers annually, our staff help individuals, families, and youth to attain and maintain stable housing, meet basic needs, build long-lasting supportive networks, and live meaningful lives. Last fiscal year ending in June 2021, we served over 3,700 individuals in New Haven and Fairfield counties; about half were children. Our data-driven and mission-focused commitment to delivering high-quality care is due to well-trained staff who use person-centered, evidence-based practices when serving clients, established and continuously growing community collaborations, and strong leadership. Such high-quality care is evident in our recertification by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) in which NR achieved a 99.8% success rate in its recent recertification process (September 2021) covering 1,034 standards of care. As stated in our current five-year strategic plan, the following outlines our programming within the three areas of focus: PREVENTION: The most cost‐effective, efficient, and humane solution is to prevent homelessness before it starts. We are proud that our eviction prevention program’s success rate over its 12-year history is 98%, and we aim to scale this service. It makes sense to do so. We spend less than $10,000 to successfully prevent a family with children from being evicted, and not only does this save the family and children from severe trauma, but we also save thousands in the resulting taxpayer expenses of homelessness: shelter, counseling, physical and mental healthcare, and court costs. CRISIS SERVICES: Approximately 300 women and children find emergency shelter with us each year. We continuously seek to further improve our services to stabilize clients by helping them attain housing. We also provide Diversion Services to help hundreds of families each year to avert entering shelter and the homelessness system through advocacy, mediation, and efficient linkages to community resources. We’ve also expanded our crisis services through an innovative partnership with Yale‐New Haven Health to enable services to homeless women with co‐occurring mental health and substance abuse and reduce the chronic utilization of crisis, medical, judicial, and behavioral services. HOUSING: We also provide the permanent solution: affordable and supportive housing. Stable housing yields improvement in our clients’ physical and behavioral health, employment opportunities, family economic status, and the children’s social, emotional, and cognitive health. We further help individuals, families, and youth through our Rapid Rehousing Program that provides short-term rental assistance coupled with supportive services so that those exiting homelessness can build a network of supports for their long-term self-sufficiency.
