Mission Statement

For over 30 years, Wilderness Awareness School students have been discovering the wonders of nature, exploring our natural environment and building friendships. They work together gaining nature awareness and experiential knowledge of plants, animals, tracking, birds and survival. Storytelling and engaging activities make learning fun and nurture students’ connection to the earth.

About This Cause

Wilderness Awareness School’s mission is to care for the earth and our children through fostering understand and appreciation of nature, community and self. We do this by: Youth Courses Last year we shared nature adventures with 2,300 young people ages 4-18. Through exploration, adventure, and creative play, students work together in small groups, gaining knowledge of plants, mammals, tracking, birds and survival skills. Our exceptional, highly trained instructors go further, by building students’ self-confidence, and other skills that will serve them for a lifetime. During the summer, kids and teens explore nature in week-long day- or overnight-camps. During the fall, winter and spring, they thrive in full-day weekly or monthly programs, or through special after- or in-school programs. Training Nature Connection Mentors Each year we train over 30 students from around the world in our 9-month Anake Outdoor School. This in-depth training is a powerful set of nature awareness, wilderness survival and outdoor leadership skills. Many graduates work for us for at least one or two seasons, helping us reach over 2,300 youth in the Seattle area. Over 70% of our year-round and summer staff are alumni of Anake Outdoor School. We currently have over 410 graduates — and they are changing the world by connecting many more people with nature every day, in communities around the globe. Adult Courses In addition to our Anake Outdoor School, our Adult Courses provide experiential training in all of our core curriculum areas — and connect people with nature, as well as inspiring strong community and leadership ethics. We offer year-round training in: Wilderness Survival, Nature Mentoring for Educators, Wild Edible Plants, Wildlife Tracking, Bird Language and more. Geared to support different levels of interest and access, we have free evening presentations, volunteer opportunities through our Wildlife Stewardship programs, and weekend, week-long and monthly weekend series in many topics. In the past year, over 600 adults gained invaluable skills in our Adult Courses.
