Mission Statement

The Bishop School's Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is a group of parents, teachers and community members that plans events throughout the year to both raise funds and support the Bishop School community. Last year, the PTO raised over $55,000 which funded school-wide enrichment programs, Bishop classrooms, teachers and administration, school improvement projects, and other community initiatives. We welcome anyone to join us, at our next meeting or by getting involved in any way you can.

About This Cause

The Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) at the Bishop school is an energetic and vibrant group that benefits from a large, enthusiastic and committed group of parents and teachers. We are grateful to our school community. As a PTO, we strive for two goals: raising and providing financial support for our school, teachers, and students; and fostering a sense of community in all we do. The first goal, financial support, is concrete and is measurable while the second, community, is more of an attitude and a spirit -- immeasurable, but certainly sense-able. Over this past school year, we have achieved both goals in extraordinary ways and we want to thank you for all of your help in getting us there! This year, our school community raised over $50,000, with our two biggest fundraisers, the Annual Fund and the Bishop Fair again bringing in the bulk of our funds. We had several other events and fundraising activities over the year that contributed to our fundraising capability, including online programs through Amazon, BoxTops, and Stop & Shop’s A+ Rewards. The PTO hosted many successful fundraising events, including the Pumpkin Sale, Walk-a-thon, Craft Fair, Games Night, Movie Night, Skating Night and an Electronics Recycling Fundraiser. Each grade hosted different events, which increased participation and helped spread out volunteer requirements. In addition to fundraising, Bishop families also came out to volunteer in classrooms, for Clean-Up Day, by donating books to Oceanside School #8, giving to American Cancer Society during Spirit Week, and bringing goods in for the many clothing, book, and food drives. Thank you! How did we provide the funds in support of Bishop? The funds raised over the school year paid for classroom and all-school enrichment programs (see Enrichment Committee Report), buses for field trips, discretionary funds for our teachers and staff, and grants to purchase new equipment, non-fiction books to support the curriculum, and online subscriptions to aid in classroom learning. Other ways we helped support the Bishop School include: providing funds for lasting, impactful programs such as the Bishop Play’s production of Seussical, Jr!; purchasing a new, portable sound system to be used in the gymnasium and around the school; holding a school-wide Clean-up Day in which classrooms were cleaned, cubbies were built, carpet was replaced, and paint was touched-up; and by giving the Bishop School main office and lobby a redesign. Over this past year, the PTO implemented several changes to maximize efficiency and improve communication. We added 3 officers to the board. We also utilized technology quite well, specifically by redesigning the PTO website, using a Facebook PTO page, and by using online organization tools such as Google Drive and QuickBooks, making access to information and record-keeping much easier. We are continually impressed by the community effort from Bishop families and feel honored to have had to opportunity to work with you! Thank you for another amazing year. At the close of the 2012-2013 school year, we say goodbye to our Thompson friends as they move to their new building. We also wish to thank our outgoing PTO Board members for all of their hard work: Celeste Hogan (Treasurer) and Usha Iyer (Corresponding Secretary). Looking ahead, we welcome our new Board of Officers for 2013-2014!
