Mission Statement
MVFB’s mission is to help meet a person’s most profound need for adequate nutrition and freedom from hunger. The organization’s six targeted food programs work with pantries and other partners to make nutritious food available to individuals and families confronted by challenging situations. Through partnerships and collaboration with poverty and anti-hunger nonprofit organizations, MVFB encourages the community to participate and works to provide low-income individuals and families with resources to improve their economic circumstances.
About This Cause
MVFB operates programs and initiatives that benefit people unable to afford or access sufficient amounts of nutritious food. These programs are: Food Distribution: manages the safe storage, transportation, and dispersal of food received from all sources, including federal and state emergency food programs, donations from individuals, businesses, food companies and retailers, and local farms and farmers markets. Mobile Pantry: a monthly grocery delivery service for homebound elderly and disabled Greater Lowell residents, providing bags of groceries consisting of approximately 30 meals’ worth of nutritious food as well as recipes, nutritional information, and brochures on numerous health topics. Operation Nourish: a children’s feeding program providing more than 800 Lowell Public School students each month with food to take home over the weekends and school vacation to supplement what their families obtain elsewhere. Community Market: provides residents at four Lowell housing complexes with fresh produce and food staples from July through October. Food Rescue: picks up perishable foods three days a week from local supermarkets and distributes these items to many of the organization’s member agencies, maximizing the availability of foods that would otherwise be disposed of by these supermarkets. Summer Lunch: MVFB partners with USDA’s summer feeding program and provides over 12,000 lunches and snacks to youth participating in summer activities.
