Mission Statement
To educate students with learning disabilities by identifying individual strengths and abilities, continuously monitoring individual progress and adapting the curriculum to meet each student’s changing educational needs.
About This Cause
Banyan School is a New Jersey Department of Education approved, private, non-profit school for students whose academic and social development have been compromised by learning disabilities, and who require an intensive, individualized approach to instruction. Recognizing that each student at Banyan School will have his or her own learning style, the students are taught compensatory strategies to ensure academic success. Then, we monitor each student’s progress to ensure that a particular teaching method is appropriate. Finally, we adapt the curriculum to meet each student’s changing educational needs, as guided by assessment and the goals of the Individualized Education Program (IEP). Both the Elementary and High School programs are designed to fully develop basic academic and social skills, toward the goal of applying these skills across many settings—in school and in the community. The LIFE Academy is our 18- to 21-year-old adult transition option for students needing additional support to develop independent life and work skills. We offer a comprehensive individualized program, based on the principles of multisensory education, with integrated related services and a collaborative approach to instruction. In addition to our focus on academics, we provide an experiential Social Skills program, which is designed to enhance development of interpersonal skills and application of pragmatic language. Typically, we serve students whose academic success has been compromised by one or more learning challenges, including: • Dyslexia, Reading, Decoding and Comprehension Deficits • Dyscalculia, Mathematics Challenges • Specific Learning Disabilities • Speech & Language Disorders, including Apraxia • Mild/Moderate Cognitive Deficits • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder • Asperger’s Syndrome • Visual/Spatial Processing Disorders • Auditory Processing Dysfunction • Short/Long-term Memory Weaknesses • Difficulty with Executive Functioning, Organizational and Study Skills Banyan Elementary School offers an intensive academic program that provides a small student-to-teacher ratio, including individualized and small group instruction, remediation and enrichment when appropriate, social skills groups, and integration of practical life skills and community-based experiences. BANYAN HIGH SCHOOL The High School program prepares students for admission into four-year colleges, community colleges, technical or vocational schools, as well as entry into the workforce. While adhering to the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCS), each student’s education is individualized to support the academic, social, and on career skills needed for their success. Our experienced staff differentiates instruction through a multisensory approach, understanding individual learning styles, and utilizing a variety of teaching strategies and program components. Class sizes are small to ensure that every student receives the support that they need. In addition to our academic program, Banyan High School offers many extracurricular activities and programs found in traditional high schools, including: • Art and Photography Program • Clubs and Sports • College and Career Counseling • Community Service Opportunities • Daily Living Skills Training • Music Program (our Rock Band has continued to win the Dorney Park “Music in the Parks” competition) Our midtown location, with easy access to businesses and mass transportation, provides an ideal setting to begin to expose students to Community Based Instruction (CBI), which begins in the 9th grade. By providing “real life” experiences under the guidance of our staff, we extend classroom learning into the community…which is critical to a high school student’s development and maturity.
