Mission Statement
Through the kindness of volunteers and the generosity of many donors, Mission of Deeds gives new beds, gently used home goods and furniture to people in need, free of charge.
About This Cause
Mission of Deeds is a volunteer-supported nonprofit that gives new beds and gently used donated furniture, kitchen items, and basic household goods, free of charge, to people leaving homelessness and others in great need. Our founder was haunted by images of children and their mothers sleeping on floors and eating on milk crates because they could not afford to buy basic items such as beds, tables, and chairs. Determined to improve the quality of life for these families, Mission of Deeds was created in 1993 as a place where people could receive beds and furniture free of charge while being treated with kindness, respect, and compassion. Initially providing twin beds and basic furniture, we have grown our program to offer a variety of bed sizes, bunk beds, cribs and linens, a wide range of furniture and household goods, and a comprehensive collection of kitchen essentials. Everyone deserves the dignity of a functional and comfortable permanent home. While an apartment is a crucial part of the equation, what goes inside is just as important. With a lamp to light and a couch to cuddle on, children can comfortably read their favorite book. When the kitchen is stocked with pots and dishes, a healthy meal may be cooked. If there is a kitchen table, a family can gather for dinner, a discussion, or a celebration. With a bed to sleep in, people will rise rested – adults will be better able to deal with work, illness, and parenting, and children will be ready to learn. One cannot put a price on the importance of these items, so we do not. We give them directly to our clients without charge. Studies show that people who live without home furnishings find it harder to retain their housing. In contrast, families who receive our service and establish properly furnished homes can achieve the stability needed to access other community-based services and remain in their housing. With a permanent home, adults can secure steady employment, provide a better living environment for their children, and eventually become economically self-sufficient. Each family permanently housed brings us closer to ending homelessness.
