About This Cause
Where We Began...Our story began in 1985 when four-year-old Colleen Giblin died from an inoperable brain tumor. In the final stages of young Colleen's battle with cancer, her parents, Paul and Vickie Giblin, decided they would work to spare other children similar anguish. The best hope, the Giblins felt, lay in finding new treatments and cures for children with neurological diseases. With that goal in mind, they instituted a foundation designed to promote research at Columbia University New York- Presbyterian Hospital, one of the nation's leading research hospitals. Where We Are Now... In the years since those beginnings, The Hope for Children Research Foundation has become one of the most unique and important charities in our region. The Foundation has been supported by over 5,000 donors and volunteers over the past 36 years, including community leaders, corporate and business organizations, and other caring citizens…is the first Foundation in the country dedicated solely to supporting pediatric neurological research at a major academic medical center…has raised and donated over $7.5 million dollars for medical research to help children…supports world renowned doctors and researchers working full-time on medical advances in neurological diseases in The Colleen Giblin Laboratories at Columbia University New York- Presbyterian Hospital. The Foundation’s research efforts are led by Dr. Darryl De Vivo, Director of Pediatric Neurology Emeritus, Sidney Carter Professor of Neurology, and Professor of Pediatrics at Columbia University New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. De Vivo, an internationally renowned pediatric neurologist, has used the funds generated by the Foundation to assemble a world-class team of researchers with expertise in numerous sub-specialties. Where We Are Going... In 1999, the Foundation made an important decision regarding its status and make-up. Since 1985, it had been operating as a private trusteeship. To move toward a larger support base, and to meet the growing needs of researchers at Columbia University New York-Presbyterian Hospital, it has now reorganized itself into a public Foundation, with a five member Board of Trustees, and a Board of Advisors. This reorganization has allowed the Foundation to reach out to grant-giving Foundations across the country that were restricted from contributing to private trusteeships. It has broadened our base, and allowed us to add large corporate and foundation donors to our loyal list of supporters. We have now in our third decade of providing hope to children. In 1985, the death of a small child named Colleen started us on a path that grows wider with each passing year. We welcome the future with hope and with the knowledge that we can continue the mission. Your Support Is Important... Many supporters of the Foundation have reached out because this is a cause where a donation can help find treatments and cures - not just for a single disease - but for a wide range of neurological and cancer-related conditions affecting children. These disorders include cancers of the brain, spinal disorders, neuro-metabolic diseases, muscular dystrophies, nerve and brain damage due to injury, mitochondrial diseases, seizure disorders, and the numerous complications caused by AIDS in children or fetal exposure to chemical substances. Your special gifts can make the Foundation's on-going work a continued success and a source of hope. Donations to Hope for Children Research Foundation are tax deductible and will be used to support medical research. If you would like to make a donation or need more information, please contact us.
