About This Cause
The Selective Corporate Internship Program (SCIP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in partnership with Fortune 500 Companies and various supporters, upholding the mission to “Enlighten, Employ and Empower” diverse underprivileged students (eighth grade to MBA) for successful careers through corporate mentorship, leadership development and employment opportunities. In 1997, SCIP Founders, Miguel and Monica McClure Mancebo began working with the Chancellor of the NYC Department of Education to select students from public high schools for an opportunity to gain insight into Corporate America. Within months, they received over 2,000 applications and a committee of corporate leaders carefully evaluated and selected three talented students. Over the next several weeks, those students were introduced to both entrepreneurs and corporate executives. Some of the first corporate site visits were to Avon, JP Morgan Chase & Co., Con Edison, NBC, and Time Inc. From this point on, the Selective Corporate Internship Program (SCIP) was formed. As of today, over 7,430 students have gone through SCIP programs. SCIP has built on its legacy High School Program (H-SCIP) to create a continuum through its College Programs (C-SCIP). Interns are exposed to global business leaders, trained in corporate communications and coached in professional decorum. These activities take place during the school year and during the Summer Executive Leadership Program. SCIP also provides mentors who help the students develop a strong work ethic, and enables them to iden-tify and take advantage of future opportunities for their college and post-college goals. Throughout the year, SCIP holds business and educational summits and career expos in which our corporate partners attend to recruiting prospective employees. As a result, SCIP Young Leaders hold a 92 percent success rate of attending their first choice college and impacts beyond the students to include their families and the communities they serve. Upon entering its 20th year in 2017, SCIP restructured programing into four distinct segments: Business and Finance, STEM, Entertainment and Hospitality. Since then, the nonprofit organization has seen immense progress in positioning diverse students competitively in the global market place, while keeping up with the growing demands of corporations and the U.S. economy.
