About This Cause

The Asian Women’s Christian Association is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit community service organization in Teaneck, New Jersey, with a mission: AWCA, centered on the love of Christ, provides families with the resources to become healthy, contributing members of society through education, social, and home care services. The organization began as a homemakers’ club in 1980 to assist the underserved Korean immigrant population at the time. The founders joined various YWCA programs in that era to expand the reach of the programs. The senior center, family service center, and social service outreach were developed at this early stage. By 1990, the first facility was opened in Fort Lee, NJ as part of the Bergen YWCA. Throughout the 90s, the Korean immigrant population increased in the area, and community resources were in demand. The AWCA developed programs to address these needs: Citizenship & Permanent Residency Assistance, Flower Arrangement Class, Grace Academy (senior center), Korean Family Service Center (counseling services), Social Welfare Service, Cooking Class, Women’s Chorus, etc. The growing demands of the community necessitated a larger facility and hence the formal establishment of the AWCA in Palisades Park, NJ as an independent 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization in 2000. At that time, the Grace Academy was the only program of its kind to provide free senior empowerment services to Korean seniors in Bergen County, NJ. Membership grew rapidly, parallel to the need for low-cost mental health services, like that of the KFSC (Korean Family Service Center). Both programs exceeded the maximum capacity of the facility, and the AWCA relocated once again to meet this need. In 2004, the AWCA opened its doors at the current facility in Teaneck, NJ. The next decade showed a rapid expansion of programs and services. The Social Service Information and Referral, Continuing Education, Grace Hotline, and SAT Scholarship Class programs were established, along with the Angel School and ISoriMoa Children’s Chorus mergers with the AWCA. The changing needs of the community propelled the continued development and advancement of the AWCA. Now AWCA primarily provides but is not limited to, social services, education, and home care services to communities based in Bergen County, New Jersey. 1) Social Services: AWCA is a County-funded social service agency that offers consulting to the community at no cost. 2) Education and Enrichment: - Asian Senior Center AWCA Senior Center is the first and the longest-running Korean and Asian (Japanese, Chinese) senior center in New Jersey.
