About This Cause

The Princeton National Rowing Association The Princeton National Rowing Association (PNRA) has built a reputation as one of the top rowing clubs in the country. In 2011, 2015 and again in 2018, it was named USRowing’s Club of the year beating our over 1200 teams and clubs for the honor. PNRA dedicates itself to providing rowing opportunities to the citizens of the greater Central New Jersey area and to bringing rowers from around the region, the country and the world to compete on Mercer Lake. PNRA operates the Caspersen Rowing Center on Mercer Lake in the Richard J. Coffee Mercer County Park, West Windsor, New Jersey. It is home to the United States National Teams, the Hun, Lawrenceville and Peddie Schools and the Mercer Junior and Masters Teams. PNRA works to expand rowing to non-traditional communities through outreach activities in the greater Trenton, NJ, area including Rowing is Growing, Swim to Row and STEM to Stern Programs. PNRA is also working with local schools and community organizations to bring rowing to middle school age students. PNRA has hosted major rowing events including international regattas, Olympic Trials, NCAA and Scholastic Rowing Championship Regattas. The Caspersen Rowing Center is New Jersey’s only U.S. Olympic Training Site. PNRA is a qualified 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The Mercer Junior Rowing Club PNRA created the Mercer Junior Rowing Club (MJRC) to provide rowing opportunities to high school students whose schools do not have a rowing program. Since its inception in 2003, the program has been recognized as a top tier rowing program. - 200 student athletes participate in the spring and fall programs, 90 during the winter - 35 different area high schools are represented on the team - 97% of MJRC athletes go on to college including many D1 schools - 74% of MJRC athletes continue to row in college - Qualified crews for the USRowing National Championships every year except one since its inception in 2001. Rowing teaches valuable skills and lessons in fitness, teamwork and dedication. Through its Outreach Program, Rowing Is Growing, PNRA strives to bring these traits to the under-privileged students in the greater Trenton area. Students in under-privileged communities are more likely to be overweight and obese, more likely to not complete school. PNRA seeks to change this Through its various outreach programs. Partnering with Princeton University, PNRA teaches both rowing and critical thinking STEM skills to middle school students. For the Swim to Row program PNRA partnered with the local YMCA and Park Commission to provide both swimming and rowing education. PNRA is also working with local middle schools and community groups to introduce rowing. The goal is to place these student-athletes with the Mercer Junior Rowers as a peer group to teach the valuable life skills through rowing that will allow them to succeed in life. The Mercer Masters Rowing Club Sponsored by PNRA, the Mercer Masters Rowing Program is dedicated to bringing the sport of rowing to adults in the Mercer County area who want to learn, train and compete. The goal of the Mercer Masters is to enable participants to make the most of the advantages that rowing provides, regardless of previous rowing experience. Masters rowers compete at local, national and international regattas during the spring, summer and fall seasons. The History of PNRA From its inception in the early 1980’s, the manmade Mercer Lake was designed for hosting rowing events. It has been the site of many United States National Team Selection events including the 1988, 1992, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020(21) U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Rowing. The Caspersen Rowing Center began as a joint project between the Lawrenceville School and Peddie School to establish a home for their rowing teams. Ground was broken in 1997 for a three bay boathouse with a multipurpose room. In 1998, the two schools moved into the boathouse with the third bay used for public rowing activities. In 2000 the Princeton International Regatta Association (PIRA) was formed. PIRA took the first major step toward fulfilling its mission by hosting a FISA World Cup event in 2001. In 2002 PIRA built on this success by hosting the Princeton International Invitational Regatta. That year PIRA also founded the Mercer Junior Rowing Club (MJRC), a youth rowing program open to students from throughout the greater central New Jersey region. The rapid growth of MJRC prompted a privately funded $1.8 million boathouse expansion project that was completed in the fall of 2003. The Finn M.W. Caspersen Rowing Center now accommodates MJRC, the Mercer Masters, the Peddie School, the Lawrenceville School, the Hun School and the US National Team. In 2005 PIRA was renamed the Princeton National Rowing Association (PNRA) to reflect the broader mission of the organization to promote rowing at all levels. In 2011, 2015 and 2018 PNRA was selected from over 1,100 organizations as USRowing’s Club of the Year. The boathouse and related racecourse improvements along with PNRA's full time and well trained staff make Mercer Lake the best-equipped rowing facility in the Northeastern U.S. As a result, Mercer Lake has hosted a number of major regattas including: -1988, 1992, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020(21) United States Olympic Team Trials for Rowing - 2001-2023 USRowing National Team Selection Regattas - 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship Regatta - 2006, 2012, 2016 and 2025 NCAA Women's Rowing Championships - 2006 FISA World Masters Regatta - 2005, 2009 and 2014 Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) Rowing Championship
