Mission Statement

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical choices over their lifetime by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

About This Cause

The Hawk Mountain Council, a not-for-profit organization proudly serves youth in Berks and Schuylkill counties, along with the Panther Valley School District in Carbon county. The Council operates the Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation, 700+ acres providing programing to over 5,000 youth and adults each year. Scouting develops good citizens and leaders. The Scout Oath is comprised of four distinct components, Duty to God, Duty to Country, Duty to Others, and a Duty to Self. This last component is so very important to youth today. With obesity rates continuing to rise, anything that we as an organization can do to assist our Scouts in taking care of themselves both physically and mentally will have an impact on their lives down the road. Scouting prepares young people by encouraging them to abandon a sedentary lifestyle, live healthier, and enjoy the great outdoors. Scouting goes beyond teaching outdoor skills; it instills respect for the environment and ethical use of natural resources. Each year, Hawk Mountain Council Scouts learn the importance of citizenship by participating in over 305,000 hours of community service. Whether it is collecting food, cleaning a park, or organizing a blood drive, each community service project is designed to support and enhance the communities in which we live, while teaching the importance of being a valuable citizen. Starting in Cub Scouts, boys and girls learn to know, commit, and practice the 12 points of the Scout Law which serve as Character Compass points. As Scouts progress through the program, they develop a code of conduct based on the Scout Oath and Law. A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent. Our ScoutReach program which provides scouting to the inner city youth in our area, is designed to increase graduation rates among youth in this underserved area. Also to provide opportunities that might not exist to youth in urban communities. STEM programs are designs to go a step further by using real life applications of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to design and create. Scouting provides once in a lifetime opportunities and the life lessons needed for today’s youth to reach their full potential.
