About This Cause

ECS is a leading provider of direct social services in the Philadelphia region. ECS is a multi-service agency that embraces adaptability and program innovation in order to meet the evolving and diverse needs of Philadelphians who have been disadvantaged by poverty. Founded in 1870, ECS has a 150+ year legacy of transforming itself in times of crisis, and providing essential support services for the city’s most vulnerable, which has included developing pioneering responses to tuberculosis, polio, and the AIDS epidemic. ECS’ latest transformation includes the implementation of ECS’ own Prosperity Model into all of its programs throughout the agency, which provides holistic supports to participants facing the complex and interrelated challenges of intergenerational poverty. ECS’ Path to Prosperity Model is implemented through its professional staff of 150 individuals, working in partnership with 300 volunteers to house, educate, and care for 1,900 clients annually. ECS’ core programs: • HOUSING: ECS provides Philadelphia families currently residing in emergency shelters with the opportunity to seek a referral through OHS (Office of Homeless Services) to receive up to twelve months of subsidized housing through ECS' Rapid Re-Housing program. • HEALTH AND WELLNESS: ECS provides nutritious meals to families through a personal choice food pantry located at the EC St. Barnabas Community Resource Center, and a volunteer-driven meal preparation and delivery program. ECS recently finished renovating its Health and Wellness suite to provide residents and community members with greater access to medical providers, allowing for more ongoing preventative care, health screenings and mental health treatment. • MINDSET: Launched in January 2019, MindSet, ECS’ new hands-on and family-based program, takes a holistic approach by focusing on the health and wellness, employment, education, and financial management of its participants. MindSet helps participants achieve these goals through career development and financial stability, pairing one-on-one coaching with group training to help individuals develop skills, achieve their set goals, and ultimately gain self-sufficiency. • YOUTH DEVELOPMENT: ECS’ Out-of-School Time program partners with local schools and provides science, technology, engineering, arts, and math after-school and summer camp programs for elementary and middle school students.
