Lutheran Settlement House

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19125 United States

Mission Statement

Established in 1902, Lutheran Settlement House serves over 7,000 of Philadelphia’s most vulnerable citizens including homeless mothers and children and domestic violence survivors. We also help unemployed community members prepare for the GED test and find jobs. Through our senior center, we run a food cupboard and intergenerational farm, which pairs seniors with teens to garden together and learn from each other.

About This Cause

Lutheran Settlement House (LSH) was established in 1902 as a non-profit, community-based organization committed to serving vulnerable children, adults, and families in Philadelphia. A non-sectarian community service organization, LSH was founded on the principles of the settlement house movement and originally provided services to immigrants working in the highly industrialized communities of Fishtown, Kensington, and Port Richmond. Since its founding, LSH’s focus has changed in response to the changing needs of these neighborhoods as well as the larger Philadelphia community. Today, LSH serves over 5,000 individuals each year through four main program areas: Adult Education and Career Development, LSH’s Senior Services department, Jane Addams Place – an emergency homeless shelter - and the Bilingual Domestic Violence Program. Of the individuals served by LSH, the large majority are low-income, living within 200% of the federal poverty line, and more than 80% are women. Main Services: • Jane Addams Place is an emergency shelter for 30 families, which includes up to 70 children. Families stay at Jane Addams Place on average 5.5 months and receive case management and other support services. At Jane Addams Place, LSH provides shelter for over 475 individuals per year. • The Bilingual Domestic Violence Program (BDVP) provides advocacy, counseling, education, emergency hotel stays and transitional housing for victims of domestic violence and their children. Along with 3 other domestic violence agencies, BDVP runs Philadelphia's 24-hour domestic violence hotline. • The Senior Services Department operates our Senior Center which provides low-income seniors with a daily hot meal and educational and health-related programming and activities. At the Senior Center we also run the Caregivers Reducing Stress (CARES) program and the Hungry to Healthy program. • The Adult Education and Career Development Program offers individual and small-group tutoring to adults in preparation for high school equivalency exams, or for transition to post-secondary education. Also available are job readiness services including coaching, customer service training, and workshops; and digital literacy training including classes and a public computer lab.
