About This Cause

Homeland Center truly is a place of beauty and caring. Founded in 1867, Homeland is the oldest provider of healthcare in the Greater Harrisburg area. The campus, occupying a full city block, has unique amenities including a conservatory of tropical plants and trees, a beautiful and bright solarium, aviaries and aquariums, flowering gardens with a pond and pavilion, as well as many lounges and gathering rooms. A non-profit, non-denominational Continuing Care Retirement Community, care is provided in a homelike atmosphere that combines the charm of past eras with contemporary convenience and comfort. Our campus houses 95 units in Skilled Nursing Care, including 24 in the Alzheimer’s-dementia unit and 50 state-of-the-art Personal Care Suites which meet all ADA standards. During our annual survey, no deficiencies were found, demonstrating even further our commitment to quality resident care. While physical beauty abounds both within its brick walls as well as in the beautiful courtyards nestled around and within, it is the caring of the residents that is paramount. Noteworthy also is the fact that Homeland Center was named as one of the Best Nursing Homes in the United States by U.S. News and World Report from among more than 16,000 facilities surveyed nationwide. The organizational structure is unique in that there are two volunteer governing boards. The 18-member Board of Trustees has traditional leadership and fiduciary responsibility. In the tradition of its history, this board is comprised of community business leaders of vision, dedicated to securing and managing the assets which will not only meet the needs of current residents, but also will assure that future residents will receive the highest quality of life that can be attained. The 18 women who make up the Board of Managers (established by the 1867 charter) have oversight and provide leadership in activities, amenities, house and grounds, and staffing. A listing of members of both boards is enclosed. These boards, along with the professional staff, are fully committed to providing the highest quality of care to our current and future residents. Fully engaged in strategic planning, our visionary leadership is vigilant in exploring ways to provide exemplary healthcare to meet community needs. In 2009, Homeland Hospice was established and today it serves over 200 patients daily and includes our area’s only pediatric hospice program. Homeland HomeCare and Homeland HomeHealth began serving patients in 2016. Both programs were established to provide care to allow seniors to safely remain in their homes as long as possible. Our practice always has been to continue to provide exemplary care, even after residents’ financial resources have been exhausted. In keeping with our mission of community service, each year Homeland Center provides over $3 million in benevolent and charitable care to those in need. No one has ever been asked to leave Homeland Center because of lack of funds. Our residents continue to enjoy the same activities and amenities even after their economic resources have been exhausted.
