Mission Statement
Phoebe Devitt Homes (dba Phoebe Ministries) is a not-for-profit, multi-facility organization specializing in healthcare, housing, and support services for older adults. Phoebe features four continuing care retirement communities (Phoebe Allentown, Phoebe Berks, Phoebe Richland and Phoebe Wyncote); the Center for Excellence in Dementia Care; Phoebe Rehabilitation Services; in-home services and geriatric care management; eight affordable housing facilities; and a pharmacy servicing Phoebe’s facilities and over thirty other long term care providers. Since its founding in 1903, Phoebe has provided compassionate care to the residents of its communities regardless of their ability to pay. Over 40% of our nursing home residents and a smaller percentage in other living situations rely on Phoebe's promise of charitable care. The elderly and the poor are at the heart of our mission.
About This Cause
Phoebe Ministries is a non-profit, multi-facility organization specializing in healthcare, housing, and support services for older adults. Founded in 1903 and affiliated with the United Church of Christ, Phoebe offers a full continuum of care to suit the diverse needs of older adults. What began as a 13-room farmhouse in Allentown, Pennsylvania has grown to a multi-facility organization across seven Pennsylvania counties providing care and housing to over 3,800 individuals annually. Phoebe features four continuing care retirement communities, eight affordable housing facilities, and a pharmacy servicing Phoebe’s facilities and over thirty other long term care and behavioral health providers. For members of the community, Phoebe offers outpatient and short-term rehabilitation, respite care, in-home services and geriatric care management, Alzheimer’s support groups, and education programs. In all that we do, Phoebe strives to be recognized as a leader of innovative services, education, and community resources that promote the fullness of life. Based upon Phoebe’s century of excellence in caring for older adults and our extensive programs and services for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, Phoebe has developed a particular expertise in the area of dementia care. This commitment was taken to a new level in 2012 when Phoebe launched the Center for Excellence in Dementia Care (CEDC). The CEDC is dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals experiencing cognitive changes due to dementia, and assisting their caregivers. In pursuit of this mission, the CEDC is responsible for ensuring best practices in dementia care across all of Phoebe’s campuses and services; demonstrating industry leadership through the development, implementation and dissemination of innovative dementia care practices and resources; and developing and delivering home- and community-based services to support individuals with dementia and their caregivers. Offering charitable care to our long term care residents is a key component of our mission and a unique aspect of the care provided by Phoebe. Since its founding, Phoebe has provided its residents with a promise of lifelong care regardless of an individual’s ability to pay. This promise provides residents peace of mind knowing that they will continue to receive exceptional care if they exhaust their own personal finances and meet charitable care guidelines. Providing this sense of security allows our residents to focus on their health and enjoy their later years with Phoebe. Last fiscal year, we provided over $14 million in charitable care. Phoebe Ministries has been awarded the Top Large Workplace in the Lehigh Valley in the large employer category by The Morning Call for four consecutive years (2013-2016). Three of Phoebe’s communities are recognized as Five-Star facilities by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and as Top Nursing Homes by U.S. News and World Report. Phoebe was recognized by LeadingAge PA in 2011 and 2013 for both Innovation of the Year and Leader of the Year, and in 2016 was awarded the Great Minds Award, Excellence in Dementia Care. Phoebe operates seven dedicated memory support communities, all of which have achieved the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s Excellence in Care distinction. This distinction has been awarded to only 54 communities. Phoebe is the only organization in the country that has achieved this distinction across all of its memory support communities, was the first organization in Pennsylvania to achieve this status, and operates seven of the fifteen communities statewide with the distinction. We attribute our success to the quality, commitment, knowledge and passion of our staff. As an organization, Phoebe is dedicated to training, educating and mentoring its staff to ensure that they are well position to provide the level of care that Phoebe promises to those it serves. In addition, Phoebe’s corporate culture and the use of dynamic monitoring systems to manage key clinical care areas allow us to proactively manage quality controls and respond quickly to areas in need of improvement. And finally, Phoebe attributes its success to its capacity to incorporate best practices into its services and develop innovative models of care not offered by any other provider. Phoebe Berks Healthcare Center (Wernersville, PA) - continuing care center for older adults providing independent living (205 apartments, 66 cottages); personal care (76 beds); skilled nursing (112 beds); award-winning memory support and dementia care; short-term and outpatient rehabilitation; adult day services; respite care; and Phoebe At Home Services. Phoebe Richland Healthcare Center (Richlandtown, PA) - continuing care center for older adults providing independent living (2 apartments); personal care (80 beds); skilled nursing (134 beds); award-winning memory support and dementia care; short-term and outpatient rehabilitation; and Phoebe At Home Services. Wyncote Church Home (dba Phoebe Wyncote; Wyncote, PA) - continuing care center for older adults providing independent living (25 apartments); personal care (20 beds); skilled nursing (58 beds); award-winning memory support and dementia care; short-term and outpatient rehabilitation; and respite care. Phoebe Corporate and Community-based Services – Center for Excellence in Dementia Care, Phoebe Rehabilitation Services and Pathstones by Phoebe. Phoebe Apartments (Allentown, PA) – low income affordable independent senior living apartments through HUD section 8 rent subsidy program and section 202 direct loan program (131 apartments). Phoebe Housing – management and administrative services to Phoebe’s low income affordable housing for seniors limited partnerships (seven locations: Wind Gap Manor, Senior Apartments at the Wyomissing Club, Weidner Manor, John F. Lutz Apartments, Franklin & Noble Manor, and Furnace Creek Manor.
