About This Cause
Meals on Wheels of the Greater Lehigh Valley is a private, nonprofit organization created in August 2018 when Meals on Wheels of Lehigh County and Northampton County merged to form one provider serving the entire Lehigh Valley. For over 52 years, we have been providing home-bound seniors and adults with disabilities freshly prepared, healthy meals to ensure they are well-fed and live independently for as long as possible. Meals on Wheels serves over 2200 seniors and adults with disabilities who live throughout the Lehigh Valley -- major cities of Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton; smaller boroughs and townships like Whitehall, Catasauqua, Northampton and Emmaus and the rural areas like Slate Belt in Northampton County, Slatedale in Northern Lehigh County and Lehighton and Jim Thorpe in Carbon County. Most recently, we have also been providing meals for parts of Schuylkill County, as well. Our clients range in age from 19 to 101, with the majority (60%) over the age of 75. Of the clients we serve, over half (54 %) live below the federal poverty level and we are seeing an increasing amount who are homeless, living in temporary housing. An average of 57% of clients live alone, making our daily social contact with them—in order to alleviate social isolation—that much more critical. We deliver meals five days per week, with frozen and shelf-stable meals available as weekend meals and during major holidays. In addition to our home-delivered meals, we also offer clients: • Grocery Shopping Services – Volunteers shop for groceries for people in need. From July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023, volunteers did 953 grocery trips for 50 clients. • “Ani-Meals” Pet Food Program – Clients who are unable to afford the cost of pet food are provided food for their pets through this program. During fiscal year 2022-23, our volunteers delivered 1579 bags/cans of cat food, 399 containers of cat litter and 1020 bags/cans of dog food to nearly 250 clients. • Case Management – A case manager visits with each client before the start of meal delivery and re-evaluates the client’s needs on an annual basis. Referrals are then made to other agencies for additional services as needed. • Emergency Food Boxes – These shelf-stable meals ensure that people have food when severe weather or other emergency situations prevent us from delivering our regular daily meals. • Smoke Detector Program – This year, with the help of a retired firefighter, we piloted a program to install smoke detectors in all homes owned by clients. In just one month, 72 smoke detectors were installed. Plans to expand the program are underway. • Chef Pack Program – Convenient meals offered for purchase at a reasonable price that offer the freedom to eat what and when you want. Meals are low in fat, sodium and cholesterol and include a protein, vegetable and starch.
