Mission Statement

Therapy Center of Philadelphia (TCP) nurtures individual well-being and personal growth by providing high-quality, affordable psychotherapeutic services to women, transgender, and gender non-conforming communities. We work from an intersectional framework that attends to aspects of social location and oppression as integral to the therapy relationship and work. TCP strives to be racially equitable and trans-affirming in all of its services and operations.

About This Cause

The Therapy Center of Philadelphia (TCP) is a non-profit organization deeply rooted in feminist principles, established in 1972 initially as the Feminist Therapy Collective. Over the years, it has evolved into a sanctuary for those seeking mental health support in a society where gender, race, and class often intersect to create unique challenges. Originally created to address the needs of women marginalized by the mainstream mental health system, TCP has expanded its mission to embrace the LGBTQIA community, particularly transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals, while maintaining a strong commitment to serving women, especially those from financially anxious backgrounds. At the heart of TCP's services is the sliding scale fee system, designed to make therapy accessible regardless of economic status. This system, critical for maintaining accessibility, demonstrates TCP's commitment to equity, allowing clients to receive care for rates significantly lower than the standard market. TCP's model ensures that therapy remains affordable, especially for those at the lower end of the economic spectrum, including a significant portion who qualify for Medicaid. TCP's staff and leadership mirror the diversity and inclusivity of the services provided. The center boasts a team of highly skilled therapists with advanced degrees in counseling, social work, psychology, or marriage and family therapy, all embracing a relational and feminist approach to therapy. This approach prioritizes the therapeutic relationship, acknowledging the impact of systemic oppressions on mental health. TCP's dedication to anti-racism, gender affirmation, and queer liberation is evident not only in the client work but also in the organization's structure and policies. The Change Team, an integral part of TCP, is tasked with upholding and advancing policies and practices focused on dismantling anti-Blackness within the organization and ensuring a racially equitable therapeutic and working environment. Alongside, TCP fosters affinity spaces for clinicians of color and maintains a white affinity group for accountability, underscoring its commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive space for both clients and staff. In leadership, TCP prides itself on having Black leadership at the helm, with an Executive Director and Board President who are proud Black leaders, reflecting TCP's commitment to diversity at every organizational level. This leadership is pivotal in guiding TCP's mission and ensuring that the center remains a beacon for those seeking mental health support grounded in social justice, feminist, and relational approaches. As TCP continues to navigate the challenges of providing mental health services in a complex and ever-evolving societal landscape, it remains committed to its mission of offering high-quality, accessible, and inclusive therapy services. The center's work is a testament to the belief that mental health care should be a right, not a privilege, and that everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves access to compassionate and comprehensive mental health support.
