Mission Statement
The French Azilum exists as a living museum and historical site to preserve and educate visitors about the legacy and heritage of this unique place on earth and in history. It was established in 1793 as a refuge for the nobility of France who were fleeing the Revolution. The village which had 50 families at its height existed as a vibrant community for a decade. When Napoleon pardoned the nobility, most returned to their homeland and the cillage wuietly disappeared, becoming farmland, and being sold off to other neighbors.
About This Cause
The only site extant in the entire world that was purpose built as a refuge for Marie Antoinette, the beleaguered Queen of France, French Azilum is run by an all volunteer Board of Directors. Board members are hands on, staffing the site and events throughout the season. The Board is also the fiduciary guardian of the site, as well as the curator of its archives and history. The Board relies on its cherished volunteers to assist with programs, repair projects, site maintenance and exhibits as needed.
