Mission Statement

Improving the lives and life chances of children, youth and families in Pennsylvania.

About This Cause

The challenges faced by many children and families don’t lend themselves to simple solutions. But Children First (formerly known as Public Citizens for Children and Youth (PCCY)), has demonstrated, time and time again, that it can create positive change for children by mobilizing citizens and public officials to address their urgent needs. We are a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to improving the lives and life chances of children in Pennsylvania through thoughtful and informed advocacy. Because we are the only advocacy organization in our region that looks out for the whole child, it is committed to systemic reform across the spectrum—from public education to healthcare, from infant nutrition to child care and early education. Children First empowers communities to speak for all of our children. Since its founding more than four decades ago, Children First has been a catalyst for significant policy changes that benefit children, including: 1)Ensuring that Pennsylvania enacted the CHIP program, which grants access to healthcare for children across the Commonwealth, and has continued to fight for expanded health coverage. 2) Leading the campaign to extend health care covered to every child in the state including those who are undocumented immigrants. 3) The force behind the School Breakfast Challenge, advocating to have school meals included as a metric in school performance standards. As a result, 61,000 school breakfasts are served every day in Philadelphia public and charter schools. 4) Leading the charge for full day kindergarten which now reaches 10,000 Philadelphia school children and nearly half of the children attending public school in the suburban counties. 5) Leading the statewide campaign to improve the funding and performance of public schools.
